Kind of a bummer though. It was there by default so have done this for years. Now if I am in the middle of filling out a form and click on a help link, boom, data gone, all that time filling out form is gone. I cannot use the middle mouse to click this, the wheel rolls when I try and then the screen changes. Trying to remember that I need to ctrl-rclick-lmouse or maybe it was shift-up-lclick or was it alt something or other? Ah well, lemme google it for the third time today, write it down on a scrap and then forget where the scrap was. I will have to google it again tomorrow a few times.
An extension that opened a new tab, all the time would be nice. Now maybe someone will write one. Or maybe just have to go back to any other browser which has a pref setting for it.

Now Middle Clicking a link is supposed to open the link in a new tab. the same with control left click, but on some pages, it doesn't happen. Anyone have an idea why.
For example, on the webpage at this link:

The links on the right hand side: Famous Mistresses, The Top US Ten Fighter Jets, etc., even when you middle click on the link, or control left click will not open in a new tab, but at least for me, open in the same tab.
The same with the links at the bottom of this page after the story, under the heading, "You May Like"
It seems as if something about the way the link is set up frustrates the middleclick or control left-click effort to get the link to open in a new tab.

In the first example, there's the code: "...onclick='tracking-function();...;return false;". The "return false;" (without going into details), prevents the browser from performing the default action for the link. You can disallow this behaviour, by adding an exception (blocking JS on this site) in Settings>JavaScript>Manage exceptions: "Hostname pattern"="[*.]washingtontimes.com", "Behavior"="Block".
In the second example, there's another approach: HTML <a> target attribute, with "_parent" value (target="_parent"), and it forces to open the linked document in the parent window (in other words in the same window/frame). You can workaround this behaviour as follows: right click on the link, and select "Open link in new tab", or simply drag and drop the link on the Tab Bar in the free space. -

Thanks, l33t4opera. That second workaround, you have to know when the problem is there, and you probably don't, so you middle click or ctrl left click (because it's quicker), and by then it's too late, unless you want to waste time going back.
On blocking JS on the site, the JS can make the page more dynamic. It's probably not worth it, for the occasional problem, unless the site is typically conventional -- not dynamic. if one browses the site all the time, and becomes annoyed, it is an option. There's an Opera extension where if you click briefly, the link opens in the same tab, or you hold it longer, it would open in a new tab. (I forget the name of it) (I tested it, and then uninstalled it because sometimes it didn't work. My guess is that it sometimes didn't work because I was confronted with the same type of coding that thwarts the middle click.. I think the idea with the programming may be that if the link doesn't take you out of the general address -- let's say Washington Times, etc. -- then they force the opening in the same tab. I'm not at my desktop PC now to test it.
Hopefully, they will not be that common, these exceptions that thwart the control left click, or the middle click. For a moment, I thought something had become corrupt in the browser. I closed it, opened it again, went to the same web page, and faced the same "new tab" thwarting link.

I have a very good reason for wanting to set the default to open in a new tab.
I am currently going through a facebook forum to save every post and have to click hundreds of links of "See previous comments", "See more comments", "See more" and so on to get all the content of all posts.
Those links merely add to the data.
It is virtually impossible NOT to occasionally click on someone's name and then all the effort to date is lost and one has to start all over again.
Removal of this option is VERY annoying and it is a reason for me to find and switch to a browser that does have such an option.
I'm sure there are lots of other people who don't want to lose the page they are on when they click on a link - it can be most annoying to lose the current page.

I am looking for that option too. All of the options above don't work except the middle-click. Keep in mind that JAVASCRIPT links don't work if you right-click and select open in new tab.

Not being able to default to a new tab is a real pain for me. I continually forget to start new tabs, and my old tabs become overwritten. This means I have to go back several pages to retrieve the old data. You used to be able to change the default in settings, and now cannot.
There is a bigger problem though, and that is that the number of settings that can be changed has continually shrunk through the years. I don't like this, and don't see the logic of it.
Does anyone know how to easily revert to a previous version of Opera? I love the Opera browser, but streamlining it has come with a cost.

+1 for the old Opera 12 option on the Opera 27.0 : Preferences/Advanced/Tabs/ "Reuse Current Tab". So everybody will be happy

goto quick preferences & select "open pop-ups in background" that will make every link u click open in background. i enter sweepstakes & use it. just wish opera didnt change their bookmarks. have to use 12.16 since anything newers bookmark manager is $hit
