How to get rid of second window?

I've used Opera for years and years. My previous computer died so I got a new motherboard, Windows 11 Pro etc and setup Opera again about 8 months ago. Ever since then I get two windows when I fire up Opera.
I also use Firefox and had the same problem there too. But, with help from an AI, I unset a few options etc and Firefox came good - only one window.
Even with help from the AI I cannot get Opera to stop opening the second window. I've tried setting and unsetting virtually every option but, every time I fire up Opera, up pops the second window. I've asked the AI but nothing works....
Anybody know the secret? I've tried everything so, please, don't suggest the obvious hints.
Thanks in anticipation -

@leocg I haven't a clue! AFAIK I downloaded Opera and installed it. When I look in Task Manager it just says Opera Internet Browser.
AND even worse - this morning it opened (for the first time) with THREE windows....
- My usual window
- this one (the second window currently with only this forum in it)
- one with JUST "Speed Dial" tab.
I generally switch on about 8AM and off at about midnight.

@leocg I only ever open both my browsers automatically each morning when I switch on. I also never "kill" them as I always shutdown with them on screen. I do remember "killing" Opera once and I lost all my usual tabs so I haven't done that again....
There's an outstanding update - I'll do that and see if I get three windows again! But I have to wait till my 10 minutes to post this response.... -

@louwin In opera://version or opera://about you have the path to the profile directory.
There you have a folder called Sessions. Rename that folder to Sessions Old or whatever you want.
When you reopen Opera, it should start with no tabs opened.
Use Opera for a while and check if the problem keeps happening.

You should properly shut down Opera yourself. If you only have one window open, you can click its X. If you have multiple windows open and want to retain all of them, in one of the windows, left-click the menu button at the top left of Opera and click "Exit". I would not shut down or restart Windows while Opera is open. Windows is supposed to send a shutdown signal to Opera and Windows is supposed to wait till Opera properly closes, but I would not trust that. If for some reason Windows kills Opera's process while Opera is still in the process of shutting down, it can corrupt your session files and causes issues with tab retention and other issues.

You should never actually kill Opera by ending its processes in the Windows task manager for example. That can corrupt its session files. However, if Opera freezes or doesn't close properly where one or more of its processes stay open, you gotta do what you gotta due and take a risk of losing your open tabs. If that ever happens, you can't be sure your session files are not corrupted unless you start with a new sessions folder.
To back up your open tabs, you can right-click on tab, goto "save" and choose "all tabs to a speed dial folder". You can repeat that for any extra workspaces you have any all of that for any extra windows you have. Then, if you ever need to, you can right-click on those folders and choose to open all the tabs back up at once.
Also, while Opera is closed and no Opera processes are running in the Windows task manager, you can make a copy of the "Sessions" folder in the profile folder and put that copy somewhere safe. You can even rename it to have the data and time for example so you know when the backup was made. Then, if every needed, you can close Opera, delete everything in the "Sessions" folder in the profile folder and copy over all the files in the latest backup of your "Sessions" folder. That can restore tabs back to that time at least. I have a powershell script at https://www.reddit.com/r/operabrowser/comments/1qorutx/comment/o2ctael/ that automates the backing up of the "Sessions" folder a bit.
There are also session extensions at https://chromewebstore.google.com/search/session that may help with backing up and autosaving your tabs so that you can restore them if something goes wrong.
