Unable to set IXQUICK nor STARTPAGE nor DUCKDUCKGO to default search engine.
ixquick.com | startpage.com | duckduckgo.com
are only placed in Search Engines > Others section.Unable to get one of them as default!

Only five default search engines, because there was an issue with Malware, etc, hijacking web searches and taking people to unsafe web pages. Here's a thread that discusses the issue, as well as workarounds.

lately I found DEFAULT_PARTNER_CONTENT.JSON.
But even if I have only to work out for on language, so it's hard for me to deal with: The file contains 9310 lines and e.g. there are 165 hits for 'amazon'.

Which fix of mine didn't work? It might be (sigh) the problem is that you're in Opera Next. I'm speaking from the context of Opera 21 and hope something I say might help you.
For DuckDuckGo, you have a lot of choices, including Disconnect Search
https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/disconnect-search/?display=enwhere you can make it a default, and have it operate from the Opera Omnisearch bar. All you have to do in Disconnect Search Settings is select that you want it to operate from the address bar.
For all of your search engines, you have an option to install them into Opera, by going to the website which has a search bar, and right clicking on it. Then pay attention to the letter/code in front of the search. You type the letter(code) first [space] and then the query. Don't forget the space. Here's something explaining this procedure with Starpage.
https://startpage.com/eng/download-startpage-plugin.htmlThe same for DuckDuckGo. Go to the search bar at their website and right click on it to add it. The initial-code for your search might be a "d" so any time you want to use it (assuming you don't download Disconnect Search and use it), then just go to the main address bar and type: d [space] and the search query. That does work. And you can add Ixquick and startpage the same way.
You could just add a separate extension for DuckDuckGo
