How can I stop Opera opening multiple Windows?

I have enjoyed using Opera as an alternative to Safari, but there is one problem I can't find a solution to: Opera continually opens multiple windows, when I open links from other websites - rather than simply opening another tab on the Opera Wondow I have open already.
When I opened Opera this morning, for instance, it opened four different windows, which makes managing everyday reading and working very complicated - as well as difficult to organise easily.
I've been through all the Settings several times, and can't find anything which allows me to decide where new links - from other sites, for instance - are opened on my screen.
Thanks for any help.

@leocg Thanks for the helpful question; it's helped me to clarify the problem.
It occurs when Opera is not open on my system. `if I them click on the link from an email, for example, this opens the Opera window with the open Tabs from the previous session, but the new link (from the email) is opened on a separate Opera window, which appears behind the Opera window with all the previous sessions tabs on.
And if I open several links from emails, for example, when Opera is closed on my system, each of these new links opens in a separate Opera window - hence the problem of multiple windows - each of which opens the next time I open a Opera on my system.
Hopefully this suggests a solution to you.
And thanks again for bothering to respond.

@leocg The difference is that, when Opera is not opened on my Mac, the email link (eg.) opens both the Opera programme with the previous sessions' tabs active, And the email-linked-page in a separate Opera window. And the same happens for each new email-link activated: each one opens in a new/separate new window.
How does one stop this multiplying of windows in Opera when Opera is not initially Open?
Thanks.
