Ok I found a work around.
Download this extension: New Tab Start Page
Enter this:
"chrome-extension://laookkfknpbbblfpciffpaejjkokdgca/dashboard.html" into the url
you should be good after that. -

@kahzmic The New Tab Start Page extension worked, but is there a way to automatically select the address bar so you can search immediately and not manually select it and delete the content of the address bar and then search. I hope you can help me. Thanks! !

@johnchino this is very annoying, and I would like to fix it. The only shortcut I can give to make it easier is the combination CTRL+L to select the URL.

@aa-g7u6kkby I know that this is an older thread, but I am currently using Opera GX v. 109.0.5097.130. This is my first time using Opera for a browser and I think it is great! This suggestion still works in 2024.
I use StartMe as a new tab/home page, and usually after installing the extension in a browser it will automatically configure itself as the default new tab. In Opera GX it eventually says that "Opera doesn't allow its users to change the default New Tab page. We suggest you add start.me to the Speed Dial."
Changing the keyboard shortcut for StartMe to "CTRL + T" and leaving Speed Dial without a shortcut or a different one does work though and without hassle, thank you for this!

@aa-g7u6KkBY OMG. Just discovering this having for years jumped through other hoops to get it working (like adding another plugin). This is so much easier, and it still works! Thank you!

@ncmsec The prior solution "broke" on my recent opera update too. I think your reply here is what brought it up when I searched for a new solution. Thanks for leading me to the old one which is much easier.
