It's rather a good idea. :)) I have them both on my computer.

You can even install them in the same folder, although I actually have them in separate ones.
I even have a button on Opera 12's toolbar to open the page I'm viewing in Opera 22 if I get problems with it!

I have them both installed and all seems to work ok.
