Been using Opera GX for years without problems, then suddenly it would randomly freeze. It did not depend on system usage or video playback or whatever, it's completely random. The whole window would become unresponsive, but if you click/scroll it will seem to get processed at the end.

Have tried checking hardware acceleration, a repair, a full uninstall and re-install (saving my user profile), and clearing the Local cache by deleting the whole folder.

      Still persists.

      Anyone have any ideas?

@antiqueantelope Having the same problem, reinstalling actually fixed the problem for a week until it started happening again. Some people say it has to do with extensions, I have Honey and Show Youtube Dislikes on so I don't think those put out enough usage to freeze my whole computer. I will try disabling them though and see if it works.

@akie47 Same, I've had no changes to extensions and the vast majority of them don't actively run unless clicked.

I also noticed this same behaviour happening with Steam's built-in browser. The freezing is completely independent; Steam freezing doesn't mean Opera has any issues, and vice versa. I don't think they're using the same engine, so there might be some other connection.

I also have Chrome with largely the same extensions as Opera, and it never freezes, and it should be using the same engine.

          Very strange.

@antiqueantelope Welp, I tried disabling extensions and even installing an older version of Opera since the freezing only started happening after the latest update. One day it ended up freezing my whole PC just AFTER I closed Opera. The only other program running was Photoshop and I didn’t even have a file open on it. Task bar and Photoshop were both unresponsive. Stayed like that for about an hour before I got annoyed. Turned the PC off, back on again, and it seemed to have corrupted my hard drive (MBR Error 1,2) I have only been using Opera for 2-3 weeks…

It seems to have mysteriously gone away on its own for me. Didn't make any changes to extensions or hardware, only possible change is automatic Windows updates.

I am trawling these forums because Opera crashes often on me.

I saw this response and had to reply. Do not mean to offend any one or change the topic. Apologize if I did.

The idea of using a laptop / Browser is the power and flexibility of extensions. If you have a $1500 computer with an i7 and 16 GB of ram you would assume that would work with all the extensions you need to get productive. One would hope the DEV's do not expect us to use this browser like a Chrome book.

I love the choices of Browsers we have and I thank all the developers and testers that make these products great. Yes there are many moving parts, But I really wish folks would not suggest crippling the features just to make the browser stable. Personally I restrict the number of extensions I have installed.

Adblocker extension was causing my issues.
