New to Opera, running Next on Windows 7. Can speed dial be disabled ? I was able to install new tab redirect from the google store using the Download Chrome Extension but it won't work, seems it won't override speed dial. Also, why can't I have a change in default search setting hold ? It goes right back to google. I just want my home page, search engine, and new tab page to be the same. Why does this have to be so difficult ? This is why I ended my short term affair with Linux - I'm not a developer and I don't have 4 hours to set aside every time I want or need something on my pc to work in my preferred way. If anyone can offer any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it.

      Thanks

All you need to do is to go to Alt P (settings), and put a check in how you want to start up. You can select a page, or pages to start from. Or even to start from your last tabs when you closed down the browser.

Now for new tabs, download the extension, Custom New Tab Page, if you want something other than the speed dial on that page.. https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/custom-new-tab-page/?display=en

Now if you have the same page set for your startup, and on the new tab page, you set via that Opera extension, then you don't see the Speed Dial at all.

On the search engine, I'm not sure what you want for your engine. If you have in mind making your home page one with a search bar on it (and the same for your new tab page), that would solve your issue. In Opera, you generally do the search from the main address bar, unless you want to add a search bar extension. There are only five default search engines, because adware/malware was hijacking user searches to unsafe sites, so Opera made an effort to protect the user. However, you can safely add your own search engine (for searches from the main address bar), by going to the website of that engine, and right clicking on the search bar there. Note the letter (or letters) associated with that engine. Then you can do a search from Opera with it, by typing the letter(s) [space] and the search query from the main address bar.

A thought: as new user, it would be, perhaps, safer using Opera 22, the last stable version of Opera blink. Opera Next gives later versions, still for testing, though perhaps with the help of people in the forum here, you will be okay. I'm more safety minded, and wait till Opera blesses a version as generally safe. Thus, I'm using Opera 22.
