I was wondering if it's possible to remove this yet? I try searching a URL only to be forced into a google search for that URL. I just want to go directly to the URL I type in the search bar but so far it's been impossible.

@agmoyer You can disable search suggestions in settings.

@agmoyer However, the issue you are reporting has nothing to do with suggestions and usually happens due to the address having an space on it or a comma instead of a point.

@leocg I've tried finding a way to disable it and nothing has worked so far. Also it's not because of adding a space in the URL. Doesn't matter if you type out the whole URL manually or paste it, it will automatically use suggestions over anything entered in the search bar.

Problem with this is it won't always recognize a URL and force me to search it on google even though the one found on google is the exact same URL I pasted. This is why I want to disable suggestions entirely, it doesn't help me at all and instead only gets in my way.

@agmoyer It has nothing to do with search suggestions being enabled but with the fact that the address bar is also a search bar, and that can't be disabled.

@leocg So it's just a shortcut to google? Because that's all it does. If I use chrome, maxthon or edge they let me go directly to the URL I enter. This is the only browser I've seen try to force me to google a URL then simply go to the URL I enter.

@agmoyer Like in (almost) any other browser, when the user type or paste something in the address bar that is not an URL, a search in the default search engine is performed.

@leocg If you type say just youtube it would make sense to "search" for it and even use suggestions since that's not a URL but if you type youtube.com or even www.youtube.com then it doesn't make any sense at all. It should go directly to the URL you type/paste like other browsers.

Thing is it doesn't do that, entering a URL sends me to google to search for it despite being spelt the exact same way as shown in suggestions when entered into the address bar. After entering the same URL multiple times it finally figured out it should just send me to the URL instead of google.

After going through that it's clear the address bar is useless for me in this browser since I can't just enter a URL and go there like I've done with past browsers for the last 20+ years. Still prefer this browser since everything else pretty much makes up for it.

Luckily I just found an extension that actually works as an address bar so I guess there's that. You can enter a URL and it goes to exactly what you enter.

@agmoyer If you type, correctly, an URL, Opera will open the page

@leocg If only it did that but for me it didn't or I never would have asked about, nor would there be other posts over the years asking about it. Like I said it only sends me to google so now I installed an extension that actually sends me to the URL I enter.

If I enter a URL on any other browser it would send me directly to the link I enter and if the URL was wrong in anyway I'd at least get an error along the lines of "Couldn't reach the page". I use Opera GX and I get thrown to google to look at every single result that resembles the URL I entered.

Like I said it doesn't matter now, I got an extension to replace the address bar so I can actually get to the websites I want.

@agmoyer hey, can you share which extension that was? I've been having the same problem for the longest time and the only solution I see thrown around is always that condescending "type your URLs correctly". As if..

@eno88a It's called "New Address Bar" the icon is just green circle with cross in the middle. It sits on the side of your screen and just click it to open and enter the URL.

@agmoyer i have found the solution. this weird problem also happened for me but not with every link. so i thought there must be smth wrong with opera and in the end i was half right.

this bug occurs if you bookmarked that URL. so if you remove that site from your bookmarks URL will be opened as normal behavior not redirects you to google search. just try it.

i believe this is a bug. @leocg , can you try to open a URL after bookmarking it? (bookmark some url, close the tab, then copy and paste that and hit enter) you will see that instead opening that web page opera searching that URL on default search engine.
