You could delete the bad speed dials, empty the bookmarks trash at the URL
opera://bookmarks
, and add the speed dials again to see if the thumbnails you pick actually work then.A different thing you could try is to goto the URL
opera://about
, take note of the "profile" path, close Opera, and delete the "Bookmarks" and "BookmarksExtras" files to start all over with your bookmarks and speed dials to see if that sorts out the issue. If you don't want to lose your bookmarks and speed dials, you could export them to an HTML file via the drop-down at the URLopera://bookmarks. Then, you could import the HTML file using the "Bookmarks HTML" option at the URL
opera://settings/importData. You can then use the
opera://bookmarks``` page to move them to the right spot. Then, you'd visit each site and click the heart icon and set the thumbnail you want again to see if it sticks.Another option you have is to just delete the "BookmarksExtras" file in the profile folder while Opera is closed. That's where thumbnails for speed dials are stored. Then, when you start Opera back up, you'd just set the thumbnails for each again.
Your whole issue could just be cache related. You could clear cached files and images for all time at the URL
opera://settings/clearBrowserData
to see if the correct thumbnail you set now sticks. If you're using Opera Sync, try logging out of Sync and setting the thumbnails to see if they then stick. If so, you know it's a sync issue.

If you still have problems, I think it might just be a bug. I found a bug with Opera ignoring my thumbnail choice in regular Opera (v92), but that's fixed in Opera Beta (v93). So, you might have to wait till Opera GX hits version 93 to get the fix.

Also, see this post for how to set a custom thumbnail for a speed dial. Could be useful for when the thumbnail you want isn't offered. The easy way might not work in Opera GX and Opera Stable right now due to a bug, but the advanced way should.
