Browser history is deleted overnight if sync is enabled. Makes no difference whether history is synced or not or whether other devices are logged in, syncing history or not. But I note that enabling history sync on PC and on phone does not result in the two histories being merged. History is not deleted if I merely quit Opera. Sometimes it takes a couple of days before it happens, but I can never keep more than 2 days of history. Any suggestions please?

@malcolmc Now got it to work. Deleted the History file in profile directory; still had problem. Made copy of History file at end of each day, then when I lost the history, replaced History file with this copy: previous history is restored, but eventually gets deleted. Turned off history syncing in other devices, then did the History file copy / replace. Now seems stable.

@malcolmc No, it happens again. I note that the deleting takes place when Opera is not actually running. So I am reduced to writing a script to take a copy of the History file each time I shut down Windows and periodically check if the true History file gets smaller than the copy, and replace it with the copy if it does. A clumsy approach, but I'm out of ideas.

You might have to wipe out all your data on the server at sync.opera.com and start with fresh Opera profiles (delete all your data)on all your devices to rule out corruption. Not a great solution if that works, but something you can try if you don't mind losing all you data and starting over.

I've found the culprit. Its' CCleaner, which I have running daily on a scheduled task to delete cookies . Not sure why it affects Opera this way.

Oh yes I do -- it was in the settings of CCleaner: delete browser history for Opera!
