I'm getting frustrated. I can't find the menu option. I also tried the Ctl +D command. Nothing happened. My windows is full of opera windows and each is full of tabs and I'd like to close many of them, but I can't before I save the links somehow. I don't know why I can't find something that should be so simple. Please help.

Type "opera:flags" in the URL field, enable the Quick Access Bar (aka Bookmarks Bar), restart Opera, then use the Bookmark importer to add any old bookmarks and folders to the QAB.
The Ctrl D command should work.
There are icons in the URL field for Add to speed dial, and add to Stash (which is another way of keeping bookmarks).

Thanks. Now how do I add new bookmarks from pages I visited like today? Is that possible? Will that help?

As I said, use the Ctrl D shortcut. That will add bookmarks to the Bookmarks Bar.

Maybe it is the toolbar I am missing, because I don't see any of those options you listed. It could be my Opera got corrupted. I had to battle a rogue search findwide that took over everything except opera. With opera it installed some other plugin which I now I disabled, but cannot seem to remove entirely. (tidy network)
The only features I see is just an opera icon at the top, the back arrow and forward arrow. Then an icon that gets me to my short list. I only want to put certain sites on that, not all bookmarks. Then next to that I see the field to type a url in, then my adblock plus , then the short list again, then add to stash. that is it.
if I click on the Opera it gives me additional options:
New tab
New window
New private window
recently closed
page
zoom
print
downloads
history
settings (shows nothing about bookmarks when I click)
themes
extensions
get extensions
off road mode
More tools -> clear browsing data/ import bookmarks/ synchronize/ enable developer tools
help
about opera

Did you do what Pesala directed in the second post of this thread?:
Type "opera:flags" in the URL field, enable the Quick Access Bar (aka Bookmarks Bar), restart Opera...
If so, did the QAB/Bookmarks Bar appear?

Yep. I did it just now. It offers something I can have always on the top of my menu. That's not what I want. I want what safari, firefox and others have; a menu > bookmarks > add folder > rename folder > add bookmarks in folder. My old version of Opera on my mac side (before my hard drive crashed) used to have this too.
I just had a friend do a search on the issue and it appears to be related to
Opera 15.correction:I mean 18. Others too seem to have the same issue. And no Ctl + D is dysfunctional.if it works for you, do not upgrade to v18. I was given no choice as I had to start over.
Is there a way I can revert to an older version of opera?
-------------
Uninstalled Opera 18 and downloaded version 12.16. Fixed it. Phew! Just beware of 18. You lose the ability to make bookmarks. Such a shame they took away that feature. -

There are bookmarks, bookmarks bars, and bookmarks managers. What you are asking for seems to be a bookmarks manager, a tool many of us eagerly await, and which Opera has indictated they are still working on, following their earlier conversion of the browser to the Blink rendering engine. Some of the bookmark folder manipulation you seek may be possible within Opera's present QAB/Bookmarks functionality, but others will have to come along and explain how/if. However, the lack of a versatile bookmarks manager is one of several reasons some users like myself have refrained from switching to New Opera. Yet.
