How to reorder extension buttons?

I can't seem to work out how to reorder the extension buttons. I can't drag them around, not even while customizing toolbars. It seems the button order is set in stone, and the order seems to be the order in which extensions happen to have been installed.
On the "Manage extensions" window, the extensions are listed in alphabetical order. Which is a different order. No way to reorder them from there, either.
How do I change the order of these extension buttons?
On a sidenote: I cannot find any of the extension button in the Customize dialog on the Buttons tab.

As a side note, take care with Ghostery.... was troubleshooting with someone else here yesterday over certain pages not loading and it was that plugin which turned out to be the cause

Not really. It's usually the site that refuses to load any further until a certain social element has been loaded. Very, very bad practice (because such an element might simply be offline, or returning errors, or what have you). But yes, offtopic

Hopefully user control over extension sort order will be forthcoming VERY soon. It's rather bad design to just dump stuff in the order in which it arrived when that "order" is not based on anything other than 'first come first served'. That's sorta like a library where the books are just sorta thrown on the shelf in the order in which they arrive while not allowing anyone to organize them.

I realise this is an old thread, but I was searching for an answer for this, and found this thread, but also found a way to re-order them! Involves digging around a little code, so if your not confident doing that, make sure you save a copy of the Preferences file somewhere before you mess with it.
The website appears to have scraped content off of my.opera before it closed, but I'll give you a step by step guide here in case it disappears:
- Go to your profile directory (found in About Opera > Paths)
- Open the file 'Preferences' in notepad or similar, and find the "toolbar" line.
- Note what the codes in "..." mean (from Extensions > ID).
- Close Opera (so it doesn't over-write your changes on exit).
- Re-order the toolbar list as desired and save the file.
- Re-open Opera, huzzah! All your toolbars are in the order you wanted!
Simple, and works with v20.

I have no idea why the numbered list I just made appears all on one line. It was on separate lines when I posted it... Sorry.

I'd also like the option to resize the URL bar to the right which would cause the extension buttons to appear in a dropdown list.

Unfortunately, neither the manual steps that nattrill described nor the Shuffle Extension Toolbar extension seem to work with the current version of Opera (V32).
Having to uninstall extensions to change the order can be quite a pain, especially when extensions are involved that have extensive configuration settings that you just finished customizing.
So here is another vote for implementing icon reordering natively via the GUI.

The work around solution is really, really easy. Just go into your extension manager and disable all of your extensions.
Next, enable them in the order that you want the buttons to show up.
From here you can delete and add back in the order that you like.
