Youtube videos are encoded on webm and h264. Webm is a free format, h264 is proprietary. For the rest of the story, read the post on my signature.
And do not compare youtube to anything else, because only youtube does provide an altenative to h264, other sites don't.

Hi @undencem, you can try the "libffmpeg" part (point 1) from here, and see if it helps in your case.

This video works in Opera fine. You need to replace libffmpeg.so with chromium's one.

Sorry for replying 3 days later, I had a minor health issue.
First things first, opera stable was updated to 64 today and it is now built on chromium 77. But let me explain about opera 63, since that was the version that had the issue you mention.
Opera 63 was based on chromium 76, so it needed chromium ffmpeg codecs 76 to work. I mention the why here, 2 posts below the one on my signature
https://forums.opera.com/post/140016Obviously ubuntu updated chromium and all its derivatives, so chromium ffmpeg codecs were updated to a version that is incompatible with opera, as usual.
All you can do when this happens is wait for opera to be updated as well.A small not about snap stuff.
The above do not cover the snap version of opera, neiher the snap version of chromium ffmpeg codecs. I do not use snap and I won't use snap unless it one day brings a top of the line app to linux, e.g. photoshop.
Starting from 19.10, ubuntu will offer chromium and anything for it, as snap packages ONLY. This will make the codecs issue permanent to anyone using the deb version, regardless if he is using ubuntu or not.
Since opera is already available as a snap, I hope opera won't stick it and stop releasing the deb and rpm versions. If this happens, I will have to abandon opera after so many years (and delete my account here). -

Typo here. I meant
A small note about snap stuff.

@jimunderscorep I have a different experience.
I prefer opera snap over the deb. Why? It is self contained and sandboxed - No dependency hell or security breach. But, I do have a problem. Even it does not run netflix or amazon prime - same widewinecdm problem. Chromium-ffmpeg-extras is not in snap store nor this opera snap allows us to symlink chromium-ffmpeg-extras deb to symlink.
Otherwise, I started liking snap (it's really cool, buddy - thanks, Canonical), especially for apps that use internet - like, telegram, opera, etc -
