OperaThank you, though how do I update to this version? The Google play store is not showing an update available and I don't see an option to become a beta tester on the page.

@LorenWard "Opera Browser Beta" is a separate app and this issue was reported by a beta user. If you are using "Opera Browser: Fast and Secure" then you have to wait a little more to get update.
Please refer screenshot for both apps -

Tried the beta version. It let me log in, the Sync slider ticked over to on, then immediately back to off, followed by a popup asking for my passphrase. My password did not work, problem persists.

@LorenWard Thanks for trying. So you are getting this problem when you do following action?
- Install Opera Beta freshly (version: 47.0.2249.129321)
- Try singn in to sync from setting menu using your old opera account
- Sign in successfull but disabled immediatly, demanding passphrase
- Clicking on sign in ask for entering password
- Providing correct password says "incorrect password"
Please confirm if above mentioned is happening also please confirm that the same account can login to "sync.opera.com"
Regards

OperaConfirmed. I signed out of sync.opera.com and signed back in successfully with the password.
I can provide a debug report if you want and can send me some instructions.

@neetesha I've updated to 47.0.2249.129321. Opera Beta is still not accepting my Opera account password as the passphrase. I can log into sync.opera.com with that password.

Update: I was able to fix the issue of Opera for Android asking me to enter my Opera password as a "passphrase" by:
Opening Opera desktop and choosing Settings > Advanced synchronization settings > Reset synchronization. I logged back into Opera desktop with the same username and password as before. Then I logged into Opera Beta for Android and the "Passphrase needed" error was gone.It seems like the Reset synchronization option needs to be added to Opera Beta for Android to allow Android users to fix this issue without having to have a PC or Opera desktop.

Now that I'm back home I wanted to update; on the windows client I have the same issue, it will let me sign in but says that my sync passphrase is wrong. Is that passphrase different from the login password?

This fixed it for me too!

I have the same problem with Opera 48.1.2331.132804 android. I don't want to reset synchronization because I don't want to lose my history and passwords etc. What a bummer; a mobile browser which can not even login to it's own web site. So sad to see.

same problem!! Wow really Opera Developers...this issue has carried on with no solution for multiple months now. It appears that any and all "help" or "guidance" that was attempted at by the developers has been abandoned without justification or reasoning.
If the spectacular idea you all had to make our lives easier is only making it exceedingly frustrating and time consuming trying to find a solution without having to reset and lose everything we thought was going to be protected, I have a suggestion for you.
a) Take it down until you can fix it.
b)Put up some kind of warning or info when you have the decision to even make a sync paraphrase or not.
c)SAY SOMETHING TO THOSE OF US WHO OBVIOUSLY ARE TRYING TO REACH OUT FOR HELP!!!!!!TY

@hellcat Have you tried these steps already?
- Go to sync.opera.com
- Login to your account using same username and password
- you will find an option to "reset synchronization" there
- When you reset synchronization, you won't loose any data from device.
- Once you reset synchronization, logging in to your device.

I too had the problem of password not being accepted while trying to sync in "Opera browser: Fast and Secure"I tried your procedure of resetting the sync data from the server. Now when I try to resync Opera on my tablet it immediately crashes with an abrupt close down. This then requires a soft reset to bring the tablet back to life. Not something I intend repeating very often. Twice is enough.
I am using a Hudl 2 tablet running Android 5.1, with Opera version 48.2.2331.133274
I would like to stress that in all other respects Opera works very well and remains my favourite browser.
I hope this serious but can be resolved soon, because the sync capability was a major plus point.

I just deleted everyhing following the steps above! I had the same problem: being asked for a pass phrase that was supposed to be the account password! I even reset my password just to find out that that's not he sh*t passphrase I was asked for!

Hello - Still having the same issues with Standard Android Opera browser. When will this be updated?
I did sign in and reset my sync data, and was -only- able to sign into Opera browser beta.
This is the only fix for those who were still having trouble like myself.

Just want to chime in on this. I just had this same issue last night, so the problem is still present in the current builds (Opera mobile 49.2 and beta 50.0) both for Android. I spent several hours last night trying to figure out why I couldn't log in or sync my browser settings, after I changed my password recently. Finally stumbled on this post. It's a pretty big design flaw that one cannot participate in the forums for help without logging in... Lol. The steps provided by the OP above WORKED! So if anyone has this problem just follow these steps and it should fix the issue. I'll repeat them here:
Yeswap:
