According to the docs, when you use a separate password for synchronization (instead of using your Opera account), ALL data including bookmarks and browsing history is encrypted.

However, if I go to sync.opera.com from a different browser and log in using only my Opera account information, I'm still able to see my data there. How is this possible? And, more importantly, how is this secure? The whole point of using my own password is so that no one, including Opera, can actually read that data.

I'm wondering the same. I'm testing Opera for Android 47 beta and have setup syncing. For encryption I have selected "Use a sync passphrase". The line under this option clearly states: "Encrypts all synced data".

However, when I login on sync.opera.com with ONLY my Opera Account credentials - I have NOT entered my sync passphrase - I see data like Speed dials, Open tabs, History etc. When you state "Encrypts all synced data" this should not be possible without entering the passphrase first.

@roalda You only use sync with OfA 47? You've never ever used sync before?

@demonbane All your Opera installation always used sync with pass-phrase enabled?

In my case it ended up just being a delay issue. This was the first time I'd set up syncing, so it took about 45 minutes before my data showed up as encrypted online.

The fact that the browser synced data before that, however, is a problem. When you first enable syncing it asks if you want to enable it or go to more settings. I would have thought that more settings meant "don't do anything until I finish adjusting settings", but data was obviously sent up to the server before I finished changing those settings since I immediately selected to use a passphrase.

@leocg I have used sync before, but I have selected "Reset sync data" on sync.opera.com first to remove all data. The OfA 47 install was a fresh one, so no previous data.

Today, I have tested it again. To start fresh, I have removed all data by selecting "Reset sync data" on sync.opera.com.
When I first setup sync (including passphrase encryption) on Opera 54 for Windows and then login on Opera for Android 47.0.2249.129124, the data shows encrypted on sync.opera.com.

Then I removed all sync data again. When I then setup syncing on OfA ONLY (including "Use a sync passphrase"), all data on sync.opera.com is visible, hence not encrypted.
