I am having the same issue ~ once I open Opera it changes the default email client to Opera (why is it chamging my email client???) ~ it prevents me from using Opera on a normal everyday basis.
Version: 40.0.2301.0 - Opera is up to date
Update stream: developer
System: Mac OS X 10.11.6 64-bit -

Yes, same issue. I think I may have to uninstall for now. Unless there is some way to remove it as an option in the default email reader dropdown. That may work.

This "currently" is working for me ~ we shall see how long it lasts.
Unable to change default email application

Sorry... it did not work. I thought it did but once I re-opened Opera it made itself the default email client once again.
Does anyone from Opera read this forum?

Does anyone from Opera read this forum?- select: "Do not allow any sites to handling protocols" in Opera Preferences (privacy and security)
- then: https://forums.developer.apple.com/thread/14502
- at the end: open Mail.app > Preferences > General and select Apple Mail as "Default email reader" from the drop down menu.

To bad-badger///
"1. select: "Do not allow any sites to handling protocols" in Opera Preferences (privacy and security)..."Нowever, this creates many other problems and inconveniences! Don't you know?

OK. You do not have this mark. You just have to be careful what you are agreeing. (Eg. to assign "mail:to protocol" to Opera)

To add to bad-badger post above (this ~ so far ~ has worked for me)...
-
select: "Do not allow any sites to handling protocols" in Opera Preferences (privacy and security)
- Go to "Manage Handlers..." (just below the above 1.) and select "(none)" listed next to "mailto" type
-
then: https://forums.developer.apple.com/thread/14502 (use Terminal command)
- then: open Mail.app > Preferences > General and select your preferred email client from the drop down menu.
Thanks bad-badger.
