Most of the time, the site doesn't tell the browser (until the browser asks for that specific resource) how big a file is. If they tell you in the page, that's really the only way currently.

Well, your 2 is redundant - there is an X to stop loading, inside the address bar. (The reload changes to X while the page is loading.) If the address bar is at the bottom, the X would be also. Obviously the rest is up to them.
