Did you check your opera settings ("Easy setup") that "block ads" are enabled?

First, thanks for the reply. I did indeed do the setup correctly. I may have overlooked the possibility that the browser (maybe even the system) need to be restarted for all of it to take full effect. But the ads are being snuffed now.

All I can tell you is what happened. I had a fully developed Opera running as default browser in Windows 10.

I created a Linux system in a virtual box inside Windows, and installed Opera on it. Opera was virginal, no bookmarks, as expected, and only the default speed dial based on region, which I deleted.

I turned on sync in the Windows Opera, and in the Linux Opera.

Within minutes, I had no speed dial entries on the Windows Opera. It had been synced to virginity by the Linux Opera.

Hence my previous question ... what the hell gets synced to what, and how can that be controlled? Without this understanding, the whole thing is a crapshoot. And shame on Opera for not making the Speed Dial portable! I would rathther have had the sync work from Windows TO Linux, of course.

In Opera Windows, I can make a speed dial bookmark for audible.com. But if I make the *same speed dial bookmark in Linux, and click it, I'm redirected to audible.co.jp (probably because I live in Tokyo). I will never have an Audible account in Japan.

Why am I able to work around this very easily in Windows, but the exact same browser with the exact same settings cannot handle this in Linux?

I've checked the usual suspects on the Linux side: popups and redirects are not permitted. Yet the redirects apparently cannot be stopped.

It is conceivable that this is an Audible problem. That Audible detects location and forces the redirect. But why can I get around that in Windows, but not in Linux?

And, to be sure, Opera has no idea what it's doing here. When I turned on sync in Linux Opera (already had it on in Windows) since my new Linux Opera speed dial was unpopulated, it quickly unpopulated my carefully laid out speed dial in Windows.

It seems No One knows how to use this, or what to expect. Opera ... is failing, here.

Sync means, essentially, make changes that keep one the same as the other. So A is to be kept like B, or vice versa. It won't work at all unless either A becomes a clone of B, or vice versa. But which is the master and which is the slave?

Potentially, without knowing the protocol, I could really end up with nothing, as a pristine instance of Opera on Linux could be used to make my main Opera in Windows, which contains a lot of useful stuff I'd like synced to Linux, as pristine as the Linux instance of Opera is now. That would be horrible.

I would *think that the instance one is currently using would be the master. But then how would you turn on sync in a new instance, without losing everything?

Have an Opera account of course. My main use of Opera is in Windows. If I start using Linux, and install Opera, open it, and sync, what gets synced to what? IOW, it would be very undesirable for Opera to sync an essentially nothingburger on a new Linux system to my Windows Opera, which I guess would wipe out most of my stuff on Opera in Windows.

So, how do I know, or control, the sync direction? It would be possible for me to have both Linux and Windows running at the same time. In fact, right now I'm running Linux on a VM inside Windows, so this would clearly be the case unless I didn't shut down Opera in Windows first, which I imagine I could easily forget to do before opening it in Linux.

Use Opera happily as my default in Windows, where it effectively abolishes the obnoxious ads that YouTube puts up, which mostly serve as an attempt to annoy people enough to get them to pay for premium YouTube. I won't.

Thinking about a Linux migration however, and running Opera on Linux for the first time today, I see the ads are instantly there, just as if I was on Chrome back in Windows.

Is there anything I can do about that?

@leocg There are no laws of course. But it's pretty obvious reading threads posted on almost any bit of software offered by anyone that user customization is popular. One would wonder why anyone would buck this preference.

And especially, since the PC/Mac is not extinct, one would wonder what appeal a razor-thin scrollbar that cannot be customized would have, unless one liked aggravating people, I guess.

I could understand, if a developer was thick enough to believe that everyone used a phone, thus screen real estate is ultra valuable, and PC/Mac users ... well, the heck with them.

@aokog This does seem to improve things. But it doesn't allow the Custom Scrollbars extension to work universally across the browser. The pages where that extension doesn't work now show a slightly thicker scrollbar than before I followed your advice, but not nearly as thick as the Custom Scrollbar setting I'm using, which works on some sites but not on others.

@leocg That's true enough. But there are chromium based browsers that do not interfere with extensions, or with Windows utilities, which can make adjustments. It just seems like the Opera people want to be stubborn about this, which leaves me, "Why on earth?".

Yes. I do not comprehend the stubborn, obstinate, foolishness of denying users the ability to set this. It is absurd.
