RE: You can't use this version of Opera with this version of OS XOpera for Mac
Ok, I managed to resolve my own issue temporarily (presumably until Opera auto-updates itself again - there's no way to switch that off in Opera). For anyone else struggling with Opera's snafu, this may help.
I went to the link posted at the bottom, downloaded the previous software version, ran it, and dragged opera into apps. It asked me if I wanted to replace the newer version (I agreed).
Now it works. I don't know how long that link will remain active - it's very difficult to find more recent older versions of Opera after 2013. So probably best to keep the downloaded copy of the dmg saved somewhere on your HD in case required again.
Hope this works, good luck.

You can't use this version of Opera with this version of OS XOpera for Mac
I have Mac OS X 10.8.5. Opera has just auto-updated itself into oblivion by requiring OS X 10.9 or later.
I shan't be moving to OS X 10.9, and it would have been sensible to ask users first if this was what they wanted. Is there any way I can undo this - restoring the last version I was using, for example?
Many thanks!
