Also worth noting that enabling Hardware Acceleration has speeded Opera up significantly. Bookmarks and tabs used to lag before, and now everything is moving lightning fast - I'd recommend switching it on if you're yet to do so.

Same here and actually thought my computer was broken - it was literally that bad. Constant cursor loading/flashing on and off on every site, to the point that it makes them unusable. If Opera is running and any tab is open it affects the entire machine, for example if you're using another program but have Opera minimised and tabs open. This is a very serious issue - though I'm somewhat reassured seeing all the comments here and thus realising it's an Opera specific fault.

Enabled Hardware Acceleration as per the advice in this thread and the problem seems resolved for now. An instant fix. Please however do sort this out in the next update. It's basically making the browser unusable.

Yeah to echo everyone else it's not Windows 10 - it's the Opera upgrade from 30 to 31 that overhauled the Speed Dial. As I've posted in previous threads the new Speed Dial is pretty much a disaster that has received a storm of negative feedback so here's what I did to remedy the issue for now:

1. Uninstalled Opera 31 and reinstalled Opera 30 to revert back to the sleek old Speed Dial (remember to disable the Auto Update)
2. Held out hope that the wave of negative feedback will eventually encourage the Opera team to resolve the Speed Dial issue for Opera 32.

Hopefully Opera 32 (or even 33) will at least fix the Speed Dial somehow by either reverting back to the old version or just coming up with a new, clean and modern look. The problem with the new Speed Dial isn't just that it's visually displeasing - it's slow as hell in terms of performance too.

So hopefully the team will take the negative comments on board and sort out the Speed Dial for the next version. There has been a lot of Opera abandonment recently but it has been my browser for so long I'm sticking with it for now. New versions of Opera will see improvements so I'm just going to keep using 30 until either 32 or 33.

So like many of you I was pretty excited to try out Opera 31. The start-up time speed boost seemed like an excellent improvement and evolution of the browser and as always I enjoy updating Opera and staying up to date. However also like many of you who have posted numerous times in this forum the latest update to Opera is extremely disappointing. Speed Dial is a massive step backwards. I still don't understand how the developers could look at their work and actually think the latest iteration of Speed Dial is superior to before when it's far, far worse.

How could they have not foreseen the overwhelming criticism and negativity coming their way due to the unfortunate changes they implemented? Speed Dial now has the following problems:

*White bars underneath the thumbnails and that look extremely visually displeasing

*Lag that seems to have arisen as Speed Dial loads the thumbnails; I see the wrong thumbnails for a second before they actually properly load. Something to do with the experimental start page flag being removed?

*Zoom seems to have been adjusted to the point that the thumbnails are now zoomed out which is also unfortunate

*Just generally a visual nightmare of a Speed Dial that is a massive regression for the browser

I know these complaints may seem somewhat insignificant given all that happened is that Speed Dial is now visually worse. However Opera has been my primary browser for years now and it's a really bad sign to see a stable new version of the browser being such a step backwards when realistically it should be an improvement to what came before. So the question I have is this: are the Opera developers taking the masses of negative feedback on board with the intention of resolving all of these issues in the next update? Stable new versions of Opera sometimes take months to come out.

They need to remedy this ASAP. People are abandoning the browser because of this when Opera is still the best browser out there at the moment. Will all of this be remedied in an upcoming update?

Your thoughts and feedback would be appreciated.

So I recently upgraded from Opera 12 to Opera 27 (latest stable build with the most recent update). I love the browser but I tried YouTube for the first time last night and the browser failed to handle the site. The video loaded and the video timer started ticking but then the video image froze and refused to play. I refreshed the page a few times and it happened every time. I have updated to the latest Opera 27-compatible flash version from the flash website.

This however should be irrelevant because YouTube now uses HTML5. Help?

PS: It's also worth noting that the latest version of Firefox handles YouTube perfectly on this machine.

So I've been exploring the forums quite extensively trying to find an answer to this and am unable to find one. I think the visual bookmarks in tandem with the navigation bar is pretty fantastic. However the visual bookmarks show up as extremely large images that prevent me from adding more than a few per folder.

In this preview image for the visual bookmarks four columns are shown:

And yet the default setting for the visual bookmarks page seems to be three columns? I'm aware that you can zoom in and out to create more space but this has the side effect of resizing the folder menu to the left and the navigation bar so this workaround is not ideal. Is there a way to resize the visual bookmarks yet in Opera 27 or 28?

Or will this be included in a future update to the Opera browser?

Just tried that and it worked. Thank you! I had no idea it was that simple and easy. Looks like I can happily upgrade whenever I want now with my profile now shared between the releases. Thanks again!

I'm getting used to the fonts now. Though they're quite bright and vivid in some instances they're actually clearer and easier to see on the screen. I'm assuming Opera's switch to the Chromium rendering engine caused this?

Also I've gone back and forth between using DirectWrite and switching it off results in a vast improvement. It'd be great if in future releases of Opera there was the ability to switch between different font rendering engines.

If anyone has anything to add such as useful advice about this I'd appreciate it.

Just wanted to add a note here for everyone that the problem seems to be completely gone in Opera 27. Opera 12 still has the problem and has the problem quite severely but Opera 27 runs perfectly without the flash plug-in error.

I wanted to let everyone know so that they're aware that the easiest solution to this is to just upgrade.

So I'm loving Opera 27. It's amazing and a quantum leap beyond Opera 12. Wonderful release. However I want to upgrade to Opera 28 Beta and as future versions are released I'd also like to upgrade when the time comes. I've noticed however that every time I execute a new Opera installation it takes around an hour or so resetting the Speed Dial, adding back the visual bookmarks and then manually re-entering the login details for the various sites that I use.

This is time consuming and not ideal. Is there any way to automatically import Speed Dial selections and visual bookmarks in to the new release when upgrading? This would save so much time. Does anyone know how to do this?

In Opera 12 you used to just click the spanner and hide it but I can't find the option in Opera 27?

Opera 27 is an excellent browser and a wonderful iteration for a browser I've been proud to be using for over a decade now. It's faster, sleeker with great new features and overall I love it. However there is one particular issue that is preventing me from making the permanent switch from Opera 12 to Opera 27; the font rendering engine.

Now initially I thought the fonts looked superior. However extended use of the site in those images in addition to other sites I frequent makes for a serious strain on the eyes. The fonts have devolved from being clear and exact to far too vivid and bright. It's like there's a blur effect placed over them with their brightness being amplified by an order of magnitude.

As I said I'd love to make the permanent switch because Opera 27 is excellent and most importantly much, much faster than Opera 12. However the font rendering is just making the switch impossible.

I thought DirectWrite was the issue so switched it off; the issue remained. Is there a workaround for this?

Thanks for the responses everyone! I'm almost a hundred percent certain it's definitely Shockwave Flash causing the problem. I just visited Soundcloud with the Flash plugin disabled and everything was fine. I then enabled the Flash plugin (to listen to the Soundcloud music player) and boom, "Opera is Not Responding". Opera Next is smart enough to know that it's the Flash plugin and tells you with an error message though Opera 12.17 seems none the wiser.

So Shockwave Flash is causing the "Not Responding" errors. I've visited the Flash website and updated Flash to the latest version but the problem still persists. At the moment the only solution I have is to disable the plugin.

Anyone know of another way to resolve this issue?

Hello everyone.

I've had this problem for a number of months now and I'm struggling to find a solution. Opera (12.17, 64 bit) tends to shift into "Not Responding" for thirty seconds or so at a time repeatedly and constantly throughout my browsing experience. I initially thought I may have had a problem with my machine but it's rather new and unlikely to be causing the problem. All other browsers and indeed all other programs work completely fine without this issue ever arising. It's quite literally just Opera and as you can imagine it's very frustrating.

I had a breakthrough with the issue recently. I installed the latest version of Opera Next (23.0, 64 bit) hoping to evade the problem by just using a later version of Opera and though the problem arose again Opera Next was able to show up an error message that gave me some indication as to the root of the problem. The error message was as follows:

"The "Unknown" plug in is slowing down your computer and not responding. Would you like to stop the plug in or wait for it to respond?"

That's not entirely verbatim but you get the gist. I recently had an indication from Opera Next that the "Unknown" plug in might possibly be Shockwave Flash. I recently went to Adobe's website and updated flash to the latest version hoping this would alleviate the problem. At the moment the only way in which I can browse without issue is to hit "Opera:Plugins" and quite literally disable all plug ins in the browser to prevent the error from arising. So my question is this: is there a permanent fix to this issue that doesn't involve disabling every plug in on the system?
