AOL is acting up again, this time with Thunderbird, as well as Opera. Many days it does not accept my password for one or two accounts, but other days it does. I tried it with Opera just to see if it is Thunderbird or Sea Monkey, but it happened with Opera too. I checked the log of Opera and it rejected the password. I can log into the e-mail account online, so it has the correct password. For a week this was happening with just one account, then yesterday it happened with another account.

RE: Opera Mail suddenly reports no new messages no matter whatOpera for Windows
@burnout426 AOL has just gotten much worse. I think they are trying to force people to IMAP. With SeaMonkey I just got this error on one of the mail accounts which worked 4 hours ago:
The POP3 mail server (pop.verizon.net) does not support UIDL or XTND XLST, which are required to implement the
Leave on Server'',
Maximum Message Size'' or ``Fetch Headers Only'' options. To download your mail, turn off these options in the Server Settings for your mail server in the Account Settings window. -

Well, AOL finally got around to changing the server for my final account. Now I can receive no e-mail with Opera.

@burnout426 I tried replacing pop.verizon.net as my server with jpop700-aol-sec.mail.vip.ir2.yahoo.com and it does not authenticate. So I created a new account and it won't authenticate either.

@burnout426 Well I finally got a response from an AOL Email Support Specialist with the dreaded reply: "that this might happen if the application that you are using is not supported anymore." Such nonsense. The POP3 protocol has not changed.

RE: Opera Mail suddenly reports no new messages no matter whatOpera for Windows
@burnout426 Thanks for all these suggestions and information. Sounds interesting to try, when I get time which is hopefully soon. The six accounts is down to one that works. Luckily, it's the one with the most mail, but I figure they'll change that one too soon. At least Thunderbird and Outlook Express work.

RE: Opera Mail suddenly reports no new messages no matter whatOpera for Windows
So, I guess there are 3 ways to respond to no UIDL in the CAPA list. One is to QUIT, as Opera does. Another is to retrieve all messages, since it cannot find out which ones it has already, as Courier does. And then it can just issue UIDL anyway, as Thunderbird, Outlook Express, and others do.

RE: Opera Mail suddenly reports no new messages no matter whatOpera for Windows
So yesterday at 4:29 PM another account at AOL dropped UIDL. It was OK at 4:24 PM. (they are read automatically every 5 minutes). At around the same time, accessing that account with the Courier e-mail program (also POP3), it started reacting differently and it read all the e-mails that were at the server. Now sometimes it reads all and sometimes only what is new, but when it reads what is new it says it is going to read all of them and then reports an error after receiving the new ones.

@burnout426 Interesting idea. I found 2 POP proxies but it doesn't look like I can get the proxies to look at messages and add a response, and neither seemed to handle an encrypted interface. I didn't do an extensive search.

I finally got a log from thunderbird. It sends UIDL even though it is not in capability list, and request works.

RE: Opera Mail suddenly reports no new messages no matter whatOpera for Windows
@burnout426 The question is why bother sending the LIST since it can't do anything without the UIDL response. The UIDL returns encoded info about each message. The LIST returns one number for each message (the number seems to be sequential). Both UIDL and LIST responses identify the messages from 1 to N and the RETR uses that number). Apparently Opera needs the information from the UIDL to decide if it has the message already. I don't know what the LIST adds to its decision making. If it could send the UIDL and get a response, after the LIST it send RETRs for the message numbers that it already does not have. I'm assuming Opera makes the decision based on the information in the UIDL response and not the LIST response. Without the UIDL information it just quits since it does not know what to RETR.

RE: Opera Mail suddenly reports no new messages no matter whatOpera for Windows
@avl A LIST is being done after the response to UIDL if it is told there is at least 1 message. If there is no UIDL capability a LIST is done, and a QUIT follows the receipt of the list of message.

RE: Opera Mail suddenly reports no new messages no matter whatOpera for Windows
@burnout426 I had just read that M2 is what Opera Mail was previous known as. Before I ever tried Opera Mail, when I used Opera browser and its built in mail client I had read about M2.
Anyway I have one e-mail account that is not at AOL. I just checked that and it responds with UIDL in its capability list. I couldn't say if it would have had problems before if there were no UIDL, but it seems that it would. -
RE: Opera Mail suddenly reports no new messages no matter whatOpera for Windows
@burnout426 I never used M2. I sent feedback to AOL about the problem. The first response was very promising, asking for some more information. The next response was more of a boilerplate response on what to try, more for people who never set the account up properly. It seems the answer is for them to have all their servers handle UIDL.

@burnout426 Thanks for the idea. Yahoo mail does not recognize my e-mail address, which is my username.

RE: Opera Mail suddenly reports no new messages no matter whatOpera for Windows
@burnout426 Unfortunately, not. First try had a certificate error which I accepted, but still no luck. Retries went through without certificate error. Nothing received. The logs show the same as pop.verizon.net did.

RE: Opera Mail suddenly reports no new messages no matter whatOpera for Windows
@burnout426 Each of the good accounts has a different aol server name when it is closing the connection. The bad ones simply say server signing off. I tried setting the actual aol server name, like core-acd05e.mail.aol.com, of a good account as the server both for a bad account and the account that it is associated with. In both cases there is a Connect by the client and an immediate Disconnect by the server.

RE: Opera Mail suddenly reports no new messages no matter whatOpera for Windows
@burnout426 All accounts are sent to server pop.verizon.net. How would I know of any name like core-acd05e to place before it. When verizon stopped handling e-mail last year they transferred all mail to aol and we still use the verizon server name. Everything worked fine until the end of July.

RE: Opera Mail suddenly reports no new messages no matter whatOpera for Windows
@burnout426 Thanks for all your help. I tried changing the server by putting 'foo.' (without quotes) in front of server name. It didn't reject the server name, but I got same results. It's the same server name supplied for all the accounts, but some use MailDrop OK and no UIDL capability and others just OK with UIDL capability, and it is consistent with the account.
