Or maybe, idk, maybe to let the users have flexibility in what they choose to use? Seems very pompous to claim that what you have works perfect for the needs of everyone.

No it's not. It's the easiest way for Opera since they don't have to do anything, but it is absolutely not the easiest way for the user to open a pdf in their viewer of choice. I don't understand why throughout this post (and others) you defend what Opera has done as if they make no mistakes nor have no room for improvement. Users come to forums to find solutions to problems, report issues, make suggestions for improvements, etc. To essentially tell them that they are just complaining for no reason and to be happy with what they have is counterproductive at best. If this was the only response given there would be no need for a forum and users would abondon the browser.
