Firefox doesn;t either IIRC. The only 'modern' web browser I know of that does is Internet Explorer (I use the term modern loosely when referring to IE). Still, you have to click that setting when the download dialog pops up.

Firefox does allow this, at least the way mine is set up, not sure if I had to do something years ago in About:config to get it to work, but I know that it's not via an extension.

Besides, is it really that difficult to double click the download dialog in Opera when its finished? It really takes you 6 hours a month to double click a box? Its literally 1 extra click vs IE.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the workflow, and I'd appreciate it if there was a better way to do this, but at the moment it seems like a lot more than one extra click.

Workflow in Firefox:
Click on file you want to open
Click open in dialog box vs. Save As
Occasionally clean out temp folder

Workflow in Opera V1:
Click on file you want to open
Navigate to your designated temp folder where you want it saved (possibly a lot of clicks) and save the file
Wait for it to download
Open up the download manager in Opera and double click the file you wanted to open
Occasionally clean up your designated temp folder

Workflow in Opera V2:
Have Opera automatically save everything to one common download folder
This saves some time when you're trying to open a file, but it seems that it is more than made up for when you have to try and clean up your downloads folder and see what is worth keeping and/or moving to a more permanent location, and what is not.

I go through phases where I open a lot of VCF files. Maybe just to get a quick piece of info like an email address, or maybe open it and then save it to Outlook. Either way, the VCF file is useless to me about two seconds after I open it. I just don't want to have to think about it again. It would be slightly more bearable if when you cleared the download list it actually gave you an option to delete the files at the same time, but without that I end up with a download folder with thousands of items in it, about 10% of which I actually want to save, and the rest that I don't.

Why do we have to "clean up our Downloads folder once in a while" (actually I have a whole Downloads directory structure, not just a single folder) when with the proper version of Opera all temporarily downloaded files were deleted on exiting Opera.

1. The temporary_downloads directory from Presto versions wasn't cleared automatically on exiting Opera.

2. Why do you assume other users would like to discard the files they opened instead of keeping them (in a known folder, not an obscure temp directory at Opera's profile in OSs' hidden folders)?

I don't want to download, open and then navigate to folder and delete the file!
You don't have to do it, let it there and cleanup the folder once in a while, you can schedule a task via the OS to do that for you automatically (or a third-party cleaning tool).

The problem is that the downloads folder I already use for certain types of files that I do want to save, and so cleaning out the downloads folder from things that should have been temporary files is a time consuming hassle.

For example, I have a website database I use for work that I run dozens of queries against most days,the results should just automatically open in Excel, but in Opera all of them get thrown into my download folder. Cleaning it out means scrolling through hundreds of files and trying to decide if that was something that I need to keep, or if I can safely delete...which many times means opening up each and every file. This is needlessly overcomplicated. What the heck was wrong with giving a user the option to either open a file, or save it (with the default being the downloads folder, but having the option to save anywhere you like, and rename the file in the process)?

This particular site doesn't display right in my version of Firefox, but they can't replicate on their end. I used for years in Opera Presto, but it started freezing up, so I tried moving to Opera Next...but this is a big enough headache that I think I'm just going to use IE (assuming they still give the option to open or save a file)

Is there a way to just completely disable the default search engines? I'd prefer to just get an error page if I mistype a URL, rather than a search results page, no matter what the engine is. I'm guessing this isn't possible, but thought I'd check in case I missed something.

Somewhat related question, can I start with just this one site as a pinned tab?

OK, figured that part out. I had changed the start menu properties to not show recent items in the start menu or taskbar. Changing that allows me to pin a site to the jumplist for Opera. This is helpful and an improvement over opening Opera and then opening the site, but not quite as streamlined as how it works in IE or Chrome. When I pin a site to the taskbar in either of those browsers the favicon for the site is pinned instead of the browser icon, and in Chrome at least the browser is locked to that site, if you click on any links it will open up in a new window. That's helpful for sites you want to make sure you always have opened. I'm guessing there currently isn't a way to do this in Opera?

Thanks for the response Pesala. I pinned Opera to the Start Menu and clicked on the arrow to the right, but the only options I have under tasks are New Tab, New Window, and New Private Window. None of the sites I have visited are listed there. I thought I might have set my settings to disable history, but I checked, and all of my history is showing up fine in Opera 20. Any ideas?

IE and Chrome have a feature that allow you to pin a specific website to the taskbar. Can this be done in Opera (either 20+ or 12.16)? A Google search brought up a couple of posts that led me to believe this was possible at some point, but clicking on the links just redirected me to the forums main page, so I'm guessing those posts didn't make it in the transition to the new forums.

Right-click on any tab, and select close all. The pinned tabs will not close.

Thanks for the suggested workaround, I wasn't fully clear though, my preferred startup session includes both pinned and unpinned tabs. Guess I'll have to try and change my workflow a bit if I decide to continue with this version of Opera as my secondary browser.

So is "continue where I left off" the only way to keep start pages pinned between sessions? I'm like Rafiki in that I don't want to close all my tabs before closing the browser, but I also don't want to wait for 50 tabs to load when I start.

Maybe, if you can get rid of all the navigation icons and replace them with the menubar? I'm sort of OK with not having the menu visible, as long as you could still pull it up with Alt. Mostly I just really hate icons and try to replace them as much as possible with text.

It depends what you mean by "GUI". For example, there are several Chrome extensions which add a speed dial to Google Chrome. Aren't these speed dial extensions customizing the Chrome GUI in much the same sense that Firefox extensions are customizing the Firefox GUI? There are even several Chrome extensions, which may even work in Opera 18+, which modify the Chrome navigation toolbar buttons or functions. In fact, you can customize the GUI in every mainstream browser, including Opera 18+, through the use of add-ons or extensions.

I used GUI because that was the term Pesala used, but what I was really thinking about was the user chrome, and I asked it as a question because I really didn't know the answer. I haven't used Chrome since it was new, and at that time it didn't seem like there was a way to really do much modifications to the toolbars and I preferred a more minimalist design than was possible with Chrome. Similarly, IE 6 used to be very easy to adjust toolbars and buttons pretty much anyway you want, but that seems to have completely gone away with newer versions. I haven't used Safari on Windows, and haven't used it very much on the Mac side either, but in my limited experience there wasn't a lot you could do with the UI there either, but I didn't really bother looking much, since that seems pretty par for the course with Apple.

It seemed that in recent years, only Opera and Firefox allowed significant changes to the chrome of the browser. Opera was harder to find most of the configuration options than Firefox, but at least they were there. Now both seem to be going towards less user options, although in Firefox so far nothing really significant has changed that can't be changed back.

For reference, this is what my Firefox setup looks like. Haven't been able to figure out how to get other browsers to be similarly minimal and without icons.

Unfortunately 12.16 has basically stopped working for me on the sites I was using it for. Firefox has always been my primary browser, but I have it setup in a way that isn't conducive for certain sites, so it was handy to have a separate browser that I used for sites that I wanted to be logged into all the time, primarily various web apps that I use for work.

Frenzie, I notice that in some of the screenshots you posted above, the Title Bar is in different colors, not just limited to the Blue? How did you manage that?

Rilef was right to chastise me though, I had spent a lot of time searching yesterday for various issues, and thought i would have come across a thread for Maps if there was one, since I had read a number of other keyword search related threads, but I had missed that one, and I had never specifically searched for Google Maps.

The original query string I have in 12 matches the string posted here, but the string I had in 18 didn't match. I recreated it and the search works now. Thank you for the help.

In Firefox I've long used "m" as a keyword search for Google Maps, that way I can just type a physical address into the address bar and go directly to a map for it. I've used other keyword searches in Opera, but I could never get that one to work. I'd do a search and a blank page with a small black rectangle in the upper left corner (like a progress bar that is at 0%) and that is it. I figured I'd try setting this up in Opera 18, should be one thing I could get to work in this browser that wouldn't in the Presto version...but I was surprised to see that I get the exact same result.

Anyone create a Google Maps keyword and able to get it to work?

I'd love to, but these are both subscription sites for work that you would need a login to access. Zoho CRM is one that someone out there might have an account with. The site itself uses a bunch of AJAX once you are logged in, but I seem to have problems with locking up even if I'm just on the login screen.
