Just tried a clean install of Opera 25 (removed all other versions first), and it's still giving the broken behavior. The "Disable tab bar's top spacing when browser window is maximised" option toggles between a visual space and no (or super tiny) visual space, but neither On nor Off results in being able to click at the top of the screen.
Going to revert to a previous version again.
Recently, my opera install started exhibiting a weird behavior: Any "Save" dialog (e.g. when saving an image or linked file) will disappear if I click on the filename field, and sometimes other areas. I can't seem to get back to it (it's not in the Alt-tab list, since it's just a dialog), and it locks up the main Opera interface. The only way to get control back is to hit ESC to cancel the save.
Chrome - the most closely related app I'm using - doesn't do this, nor does any other application I have installed. I've tried reverting to older Opera versions with no luck. I've never seen this sort of behavior before - has anyone else encountered this?
I reverted to Opera 22.0, and it's working again for me. I guess I'll stay on this version for a while.
Again - that option does not fix the problem for me. It visually switches between a tiny space and what appears to be no space, but the tabs are non-responsive (and don't highlight when hovered) if the mouse is at the very top of the screen in either case.
The only other program I have installed with tabs at the top like that is firefox, which does not exhibit this behavior.
We must have posted at the same time. That option no longer works - at least for me.
Go to settings and enable "advanced settings" at the bottom if it's not already enabled.
Above it there should now be an option "Disable tab bar's top spacing when browser window is maximised".
Checking that should fix it!
I just remembered that I previously fixed this with the "Disable tab bar's top spacing when browser window is maximized" option in Settings under User Interface.
Unfortunately, it no longer works. That option seems to toggle between a 1-pixel space, and something larger than that.
There must be a way of fixing this through CSS or some such, though.
When Opera is maximized, there seems to be a 1-pixel tall horizontal space above where the tabs are. (I've got my tabs on top, above everything else.) This is annoying as heck, because it makes it impossible to shoot your mouse quickly to the top of the screen and click a tab - you always have to land inside the height of the tab itself, instead of just overshooting and letting the top of the screen stop you.
Is there any way of removing this tiny space?
Nice catch. I don't know how that got turned on, since I don't ever use it. Seems to fix the issue.
Like the title says... Adding [*.]youtube.com (for example) to the click-to-play exceptions, seems to have no effect. Have tried restarting browser & clearing cache. Click-to-play seems to be an all-or-nothing proposition for me.
Windows 7, Opera 22.0.1471.70. Printing to PDFRedirect comes out mangled - see image below.
Unfortunately, I can't test with a regular printer, as I don't own one. But all other browsers & apps print to PDFRedirect with no problem, and printing from a private browsing window is also mangled, suggesting that it's not an extension problem.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?
Update: Unfortunately, "plain Alt" isn't implemented well. If you hit Alt+d to focus the address bar while it's already focused, you get the Opera button menu instead. This is incredibly irritating, since the address bar will auto-magically get focus at various times, so you either need to be constantly checking where your focus is, or prepare yourself for the button menu to open itself and block you from typing into the address bar.
Firefox has this correctly implemented, btw. Alt+d always gives you the address bar, and "plain Alt" always gives you the menu.
+1 for this. As long as I've got Alt or Alt+f, I don't need the button hanging out there and taking up space.
A couple things I'm really missing after switching from Chrome: rounded tabs & the slight gradient background on the tool/bookmark bars. I just find it a lot more readable than the default square tabs and flat grey:
Also, I'm finding the spacing of bookmarks on the bookmarks bar is slightly wider than Chrome, so my imported bookmarks run off the edge of the bar.
On Firefox, I was able to use the excellent "Stylish" extension to edit the guts of the interface and make FF look almost identical to Chrome. Although Stylish exists for Opera, it's for v12 & doesn't seem to work with v22.
New opera user here. I'm really disappointed to find right away that I'm locked out from setting my own default search engine.
I understand the argument that there's some large fraction of the userbase that needs to be protected from themselves, and from internet malefactors. However, I reject the premise that this means removing basic functionality for "power users" is the only option. It's easy enough to include a hidden option that's editable only by a human being.
And the suggestion that google & yahoo are somehow "safer" than startpage and duckduckgo doesn't even merit a response. Particularly if, as one poster above suggested, the searches aren't even implemented securely.
For now, I'm using the disconnect search extension to force my default search to duckduckgo (though I'd prefer startpage). But I hope the developers choose to re-institute this choice for those who are responsible enough to make it.
That said, so far I'm loving Opera. And the checkbox that disables the tiny space above the tab line? Brilliant!
