Hello,
I have also had the same problem 3 times, Opera crashing and the icon in the dock was also changing to a generic application icon.
The solution was to download and install Opera again.
The very positive issues are that mostly all settings are retained and that the installation process is smooth and straight forward.

RE: Passwords & Login sessions are not saved on build 56.0.3051.36Opera for Mac
It also appears that those passwords that are still saved are not listed in 'Password Manager', even if it is showing in the password pop up window next to address bar.
The Password Manager List is just empty.
When updating login and password, Opera never ask to save the password (even with setting being 'on' in Preference). Thanks for your answer(s).

RE: Passwords & Login sessions are not saved on build 56.0.3051.36Opera for Mac
@avl Sorry to contradict, but this has well been reported by several users, including myself.
I am using the latest Opera version on MAc OS 10.13.6 on 3 different Macbook (Pro & Air).Until some months ago , login and passwords were perfectly saved by Opera; after an update somewhere in June/July, login and password for several websites where not retained or updated anymore.
What is confusing is that not all web sites are affected; the login/password is saved/updated for some other websites —> meaning that the settings in Opera Preferences are OK.
After searching this forum, several corrective actions were tried : resetting/installing Opera, Disk Utility, rebuilding permissions, changing access to Opera Safe Storage in Keychain Access, …
The problem remains unsolved and identical on all 3 MacBook !!! -
RE: Passwords not stored and not updated anymoreOpera for Mac
Update
After a good night rest, the system is apparently working again as intended.I am wondering if I should also not clear the cache on the synchronised versions on my other computers, but I am always afraid to loose some data.

Passwords not stored and not updated anymoreOpera for Mac
Hello,
Since I updated to the last Opera Version: 52.0.2871.40 , passwords are not stored anymore and when they are changed for existing login, there is no popup asking to update the existing passwords.
There are only two extensions installed : Ghostery and HTTPS Everywhere.
I also just cleared the cache, hoping that rebuilding it on restart could help; but it did not.Thank you for any help.

RE: Opera always sets itself as my default Mail AppOpera for Mac
Thank you akalkatx, this new feature has indeed fixed the problem.
However note for other users, you still have to go in Mail>Preference>General to reconfirm the default email reader as 'Mail'.
Changes only take effect after a restart.

RE: Opera always sets itself as my default Mail AppOpera for Mac
Exactly the same problem here
The following was posted in the Apple Support Communities forum (but I fear that the answer should come form Opera Community)
Although I keep setting the Default Email Reader in Mail Preference to 'Mail', the system keep resetting it to 'Opera'
Each time Mail is closed and reopened, the default email reader previously set to 'Mail' will show 'Opera' …Extremely annoying, since when clicking on a email link, it will keep opening a new message in Opera, instead of Mail (my default email application).
Restarting, Disk Utiliy > First Aid did not help.
Any suggestion to correct this annoyance is welcome.OS El Capitan 10.11.6
Mail 9.3
Opera 40.0 latest update
Any help is very welcome.
