I verified that opera runs under my UID, verified the folder permissions, and wrote a file in that folder using cp, gvim and firefox.

For some time now (couple of months?), I cannot download anything from Internet using Opera. Not even when I MB2 on an article and select "Save as...".

The "Save File" window will pop-up with the default location displayed and Name automatically filled in.

In /var/log/kern.log, the following messages appear:

When I hit the "Save"-button in the pop-up window, the window closes, but no file is written. In ~/.xsession-errors, it adds a line: "Window manager warning: Log level 16: Visible region is null"

Firefox works fine.

Based on other people reporting similar problems, I tried a number of things:

• cleared the browser cache
• restarted Opera
• verified xdg-desktop-portal xdg-desktop-portal-gtk were at the most recent version
• rebooted the system
• in Opera Settings, changed the download folder from "Ask where to save each file before downloading" back to default (~/Downloads)
• verified the file protections on the folder
• changed the filename of the file to be written
• in Settings, (briefly) allowed insecure
• verified diskspace on the folder and on /tmp
• opened Opera from a terminal
  When I click on "Save as...", this message is written to the terminal:
  "Gtk-Message: 00:20:25.967: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is discouraged."
• created a new user account on my computer and opened opera without extensions

All to no avail.

Opera version is the most recent (120.0.5543.161).
Ubuntu is not: 20.04.6 LTS (fwiiw, I'm using Ubuntu Mate)
But I've seen similar posts from people running higher (fully supported) versions of Ubuntu and other flavours of Linux. Also from people running other browsers such as Brave.
(Brave and Opera are both based on Chronium. Maybe this is a Chronium issue?)
