Opera Mini compressing proxy is used slso for encrypted HTTPS pages.

My understanding is that all traffic between the Opera Mini client app and the Opera cloud server is encrypted.

Not sure if it's all encrypted. But the traffic FROM Mini servers to a Mini client is compressed using proprietary technology so I guess it's as good as encryption

True, but I'm not sure proprietary formats are necessarily difficult to read... I hope that yeswap is right in this case
