Unable to add emoticons to the first post of a new thread

Anyone know why when you start a thread you don't seem to be able to add emoticons to the first post?
The icon for adding them just isn't there.
It's also not there on subsequent edits of that post.
The only way of adding them is to insert the equivalent text manually, as I've done here!
Also incidentally, the "edit" cogwheel to the right of threads that you've started in the list, doesn't work after someone has added another post.
It does work until then.
You get "Error 401 - You are not authorized to view this page."

Actually, forget my last paragraph!
The problem isn't that at all, it's simply that you're trying to edit after the 30 minute timeout.
The problem is that on posts after that has expired the edit option actually disappears, whereas on the list entry for the thread it remains, but just throws the error message if you try to use it.
It should be removed once the timeout has expired.

I don't think so: it's a generic icon/button, and it might, well, be considered to expand. Or not.
On the other hand, others don't have that wheel for your thread, I get. -

It only appears on a thread in the list that you've started.
It should act like the cogwheel icon on posts, which reverts to "flag" only after the 30 minute deadline for edits has passed.
Ideally if you can't use it any more it should disappear altogether.
