I'm using opera stable 28 and opera beta 29 on ubuntu 12, 64bit.
After a lot of browsing, opening and closing about 30 tabs and remaining with 10 tab opened opera use about 1,7-1,8 Gb of ram. After closing and restarting opera, with reloading of the last 10 tab opera use about 1,1 Gb of ram.
Make the same test on firefox 36 with the same process (open and closing the same 30 page and remaining with the same 10 tabs/site), it use about 850-900 Mb of ram. Closing and restarting firefox, saving the session before, in order to reload the 10 tab after a restart produce a use of 800 Mb of ram.
Firefox result more memory efficient and when closing tab it release the used ram efficiently.
Why opera seems eating up the ram ? This fact penalize long session of browsing. Please investigate about memory efficiency of opera on linux.

I vote in.
I have eleven tabs of mostly text and youtube with a simple html5 video for 536MB and if I open youtube and facebook too, after an hour or so Opera gets killed for oom after freezing my machine for a few seconds.
I ah running Opera with the following parameters:
/usr/lib/opera/opera --type=renderer --alt-high-dpi-setting=96 --system-dpi-setting=96 --disable-direct-npapi-requests --lang=en-GB --extension-process --enable-webrtc-hw-h264-encoding --disable-client-side-phishing-detection --enable-delegated-renderer --num-raster-threads=2 --content-image-texture-target=3553,3553,3553,3553,3553,3553,3553,3553,3553,3553,3553,3553 --video-image-texture-target=3553 --disable-accelerated-video-decode --channel=1321.3.659308152 --v8-natives-passed-by-fd --v8-snapshot-passed-by-fd
