Sync not responding after QR code scanned

I would be very grateful if someone could advise me why, whenever I use my 'phone to scan the QR code on the PC it just takes me back to the "Let's get started with your email" page when I'm already signed in to my Opera account on both devices.
It has worked properly only once, but ever since has misbehaved as above.
I've signed in a dozen times but this just keeps happening every time instead of getting the page to check the codes match.
Windows PC and Samsung A06.
