Lost bookmarks after upgrading to Opera 28

I had hundreds of bookmarks on my "Bookmark Bar" with folders and subfolders. Now they are gone after upgrading to Opera 28. Fortunately I can see all my bookmarks in the bookmarks.adr file under the old profile directory. But after I copy the bookmarks.adr file from the old profile directory to the new directory, my bookmarks are still missing.
I have also tried importing the bookmarks, but it only imported the bookmarks that were on the Bookmark Bar excluding all the bookmarks that were in the folders.
What can I do to get my bookmarks back? I don't know what my original version of Opera was.

Did you use the import of bookmarks within opera 28 from opera 12xx? Opera's menu bar move to more tools, select "import bookmarks and settings". When the box opens, select 12xx from the drop down menu. Have a check mark by the Favorites/Bookmarks then click on import button. For me all my sub folders imported successfully. As to what your previous version of opera was just run it. Click on "help" on the tool bar and select "about opera". This applies to opera 12.17 and older versions. There it will show what version it is.

I just want to say thank you drillbit for your help in clearing this up for me. I have been searching for an answer to importing my bookmarks to Opera 28 from Opera 12.17 and I have read that it's IMPOSSIBLE. I even got an extension that was supposed to help, but it didn't. After reading your post I did it. I sat there puzzled as to why everyone else presented it as so difficult all the way to impossible. Thank you again. Just one more question for you... how do I get my imports added to my present bookmarks? Is there a way other than opening each one and clicking "add"? Thanks!
