Opened links in new tabs taking forever to load, url shows 'about:blank'.

Not sure if this started happening after the last update of opera. Almost every time I open the links in new tabs, they show 'loading' as the title in the tabs and 'about:blank' in the address bar. What's most annoying is sometimes it gets very difficult to keep track of the links I tried to open in new tabs since the links are missing in the loading pages.
Another weired thing is, when I try to copy and paste a link in the address bar of the stuck page, it doesn't load that too. But when I open a new tab by clicking the '+' button, paste the link and hit enter, it loads!
I have been using opera for the last 6 years at a stretch, and this is probably the most irritating problem I've faced so far. Eagerly looking for a fix. Thanks in advance.

my version is 28.0.1750.48, and I've been experiencing it for maybe two days now.
