Open a New Tab in the Background?

Seems to me that new tabs open either in the background (they're in the list of tabs at the top of the screen) but you're still in the tab you were viewing or in the foreground (you are immediately switched to that tab) and have to switch back to the tab you were viewing before you opened the new tab. Is there a way to set a global requirement that all tabs automatically open in the background? My apologies if the answer is obvious but I couldn't find it in Help or anywhere else.

Left clicks takes you to the link in your current tab (unless the HTML of the website says to open a new tab). Middle click opens it in a background tab no matter what.
