External Links open a new Window instead of Tab when Opera is closed

This is driving me absolutely crazy and is single handedly keeping me from being able to switch to Opera as a default. If Opera already has a window open and running somewhere, great, clicking a link from Apple Mail or anywhere else will open a new tab in the already open window.
However, if Opera is not already open, clicking a link will open the last current window and tabs (as it should) and a new hidden window with the link I pressed hidden behind everything else instead of in a new tab of the restored window! The worst part about this behavior is that it is bad enough that it opens a new window, but it is forced in the background. I have tried searching the forums, settings, flags, etc. Please someone tell me how to fix this!
