When I recieve new mail in a thread, the mail doesn't get bumped to the top of the email list. Instead, it stays at the first email's sent date. How do I fix it so that recent mail in a thread gets shot to the top of the email list?

When a new message in a thread comes in, the thread and all of its messages should jump up to the top of the mailing list (or bottom depending on list sorting order).

The new message in the thread though should appear last in the thread (well, last in the reply-level it's in in the thread) by date (date header), regardless of list sort order. Note though that this is a change that was made a while ago. Before, if the list was sorted by date in descending order, the new message would be first (up top) in its reply level in the thread. But, that was changed as it was backwards to read new replies first in each reply level as you'd be reading replies to other messages you haven't read yet. The downside is that there was no option added to revert to the old before if you really liked it.

So, if you're just seeing the behavior mentioned above, there's nothing you can do about it. It's just the way it is.

Note though that if the message is automatically marked as read by some label, or if the message is in an ignored thread or is an ignored contact, the thread itself might not jump to the top. I forget.

Note though that moving a message to the trash and undeleting it can mess up thread. Also, threading in Gmail IMAP label folders can sometimes get messed up too where you have to unsubscribe from the IMAP folder and resubscribe to fix it.

Besides all that, make sure you have the list sorted by date in descending order so that threads at least jump to the top of the list when they get a new message.

Besides that, I'm not sure what's up. Might be something wrong with the threading. You can test with a new mail folder to see if it work any differently.

Hi, Burnout.. Good hearing from you again. When new mail in the thread is received, it naturally goes to the bottom of the thread, no problem. But the thread doesn't jump to the top of the list. This is a bit weird. If you know or come across a fix for this, please let me know. Thanks man!!!

Is this with IMAP or POP?

Is the list sorted in ascending or descending order?

            What's the listed sorted by?

Do you have date groups enable in the list?

What mail layout are you using (list and message on right for example)?

When you go to the thread in the list, is the new message marked as unread like it should be?

How is threading enabled for the list? Is it just accepting the global threaded option or is threading turned off globally where it's turned on (overridden) for the particular list? Or, is threading turned on globally and overridden and turned on for the list too?

Is the thread an ignored thread?

Are you referring to a thread getting a new sent message either from you sending a message with Opera or you sending a message with another client where Opera recognizes it via IMAP?

              Hi, Burnout.

              -This is an IMAP account.

              -It's sorted by sent date.

              -Not in ascending order.

              -Group by date isn't enabled.

-Mail layout is list and message on right.

-Yes, new mail in the thread is marked as unread.

-I'm sure that I have the global threaded option enabled. I didn't know there was a "local" threaded option.

              -No, thread is not ignored.

-AFAIK, I don't think the thread is ignored.

-I'm referring to new mail sent to me from someone else.

Thanks for the clarifications. Nothing sounds odd about your settings. The thread should just jump to the top of the list when a new messages for it comes in. Not sure why it's not.

                -This is an IMAP account.

Launch the Opera installer, click "options", set "install path" to a folder on your desktop, set "install for" to "Standalone Installation (USB)" and installer. In that Opera, set up the IMAP account and see if it works fine there. If it does, there's just something messed up with your regular mail folder.

I didn't know there was a "local" threaded option.

You'll see it if you click the "settings for this view" button on the message list toolbar. It allows you to override the global settings just for that view.

Hi, Burnout. Thanks for the help. I'll look further into it. I got another question. Every so often I experience the 'mailing lists' tab popping up on the left side of my mail. I keep hiding it. But it keeps coming up every so often. How can I fix it so it doesn't come up again?

You can't fix it really. It's just automatic behavior (showing mailing lists when a new mailing list message comes in) that Opera does and there's no way to turn it off.

What you can do though since hiding the mailing list section doesn't stick) is create a folder in the mailing lists section, drag all your mailing lists into it and then collapse the mailing list section. That way it won't take up much space and even if it gets expanded, it still won't take up much space. Of course, when there's a new mailing list detected, you'll have to drag that one into the folder too.

HI, Burnout. I will definitely try that. It's just so damn annoying seeing this list pop up when you check mail.

Anyway, I got another question. I don't like Opera's downloader. When I'm downloading stuff through it, the download stops for whatever reason (albeit connection issues, etc.). And it's annoying having to re-download again and the resume option down't really help in many cases. Can you recommend a very good downlloader that integrates into Opera? I'd appreciate it Burnout!!!
