Manage entries in History by exclusion in advance

To prevent the history file from becoming too large and become more manageable, next to easy batch-wise deleting/cleaning (as suggested below), I'd like to be able to prevent some entries to become part of the file (exclusion). For example, when I use Google Streetview to find a certain address or building Maps enters dozens of records in my history. When I do my grocery shopping it does so too. I'd like to exclude the Maps-website and the website of my grocery store from entering my History file. I even tend (but am not sure) to do so for all my searching in google, for only my clicked findings generally are relevant.
I can imagine it would be easier or beter to delete these 'in advance' excluded website from history when closing the browser, so that might be an option too, selective deletion at closing. Anyway, the file will be leaner and cleaner.
