You need to provide your Opera version, as well as what operating system you're using.

Do you keep backups of your 'personal' files or have you used Opera Sync in the past? If Opera has been crashing, it's possible that the crash corrupted the bookmarks.adr file in which Opera 12 stores its bookmarks. If Opera cannot find an uncorrupted version of its bookmarks file, it will automatically copy an empty, default bookmarks file version into your user folder and start using that - but, of course, it will lack your customized set of bookmarks. With XP, if you aren't routinely backing up your files, there's no backup copies automatically created if a file is over-written by a new file of that same name. (In Win 7, the 'shadow copy' feature, if enabled, keeps 'hidden' copies of such files so they can often be brought back that way.)

In Opera, try checking at: Help > About Opera > locate the path to "Bookmarks". Then use Windows' Explorer to navigate to that path location and check the file-size of the bookmarks.adr file there. What is that file size? Also, in that same location, are there any other bookmarks-named files present, perhaps with different extensions (eg: bookmarks.bak)?

Is it truly a backup and not the currently-used Opera file? Presto Opera allows you to relocate its bookmark file to wherever you want, and it will run with it there just fine.

Well, it didn't tell me when it did. And why.
Thanks for the revelation - I'll take care of that file from now on*:scared:*

Yeah, you're right! Just checked the sizes!
Is it possible to relocate it back?

To change the bookmarks.adr file's 'working' location, with Opera off, copy the bookmarks.adr file that you want to be Opera's 'working' bookmarks file into the Opera folder where you want it to reside, either over-writing any bookmarks.adr file already there or (the safest way) first altering the name of any same-named file already there, such as to bookmarksX.adr. Turn Opera on and, in its address box, enter: Opera:config

Then, in the Preferences Editor that appears, search for "hot list" (without the quotes). It should bring up an entry under "User Prefs" entitled "Hot List File Ver2". Select the "Choose..." button to select the path you just put the copied file into in the first step, and click Open. (Opera will select the bookmarks.adr in that chosen folder to put its bookmarks into thereafter.) If this is what you want, click Save.

                      1. There are no "same-named" files in any given folder.
                      2. You mean my back up files or like that?
                      3. What's in the name! And can I alter the name of the file that is in use now? I mean to reassign?
                        Can I move that file?

                        Can I move that file?

Presto Opera is 'wired' to use a bookmarks file with the name "bookmarks.adr", in a folder identified via opera:config along the path set as I described above, or else established by the default Opera installation procedures. "Same-named" simply means a file with the same name, ie: bookmarks.adr. You can alter where Opera looks for the file, but you need to retain that specific file name/extension for Opera to recognize it. If Opera looks in the specified path/folder for the bookmarks.adr file and can't find it, it will automatically create a fresh, unfilled copy in that folder using its default-file trove, and start operations using that.

If you simply move that file or rename it using Windows or something similar, Opera won't know it's moved or been renamed, and (finding its specified folder empty of that specific file) will automatically create a new, fresh bookmarks file with the correct name. To "move" the bookmarks.adr file and expect Opera to continue using it, you need to follow the steps outlined above to tell Opera where it now resides.

For backing the bookmarks file up, there are two ways to go about it:

                        1. With Opera off, simply copy the file Opera is using to its same folder and rename it to something like bookmarks.bak. This is almost trivial to do, but leaves the file subject to the some of the same failure modes as the file Opera uses: drive failures, malware corruption, lost folders, etc... but it does prevent Opera crashes that corrupt the 'working' bookmarks file from affecting the backup (.bak) copy - Opera simply doesn't know it's even there.

                        2. Simply copy the bookmarks.adr to a separate folder/drive/flash-stick/whatever. Backing up to separate media is probably the safest way to go, since it gives the best protection against possible loss modes. The safest of all, of course, is backing up to external media that is stored off-site.

Just an "out of the blue" file. .adr, of course. I backed it up this summer...
