Just upgraded to latest stable, also tried beta & developer version, still the same. I'm giving up and move to Vivaldi.

@aglupus Alternatively, you could install an older package.

@aglupus I have made the move to Vivaldi. It was a sad day since I've been using Opera as my primary browser on linux for more than 15 years. But, I've exported my bookmarks as html and imported them into Vivaldi without a hitch.

Focus follows pointer without auto-raise is essential to my way of working. I never thought that this feature would be the final deal breaker of Opera. Thanks for all of the excellent years of browsing!

You can see from my previous posts, i tried a few different flavors of linux with same result,

I switched over to KDE (manjaro) and Opera works fine there. As I don't see anyone any other pots mentioned KDE, its probably solid on that windows manager

@aplus : Maybe, but I'm not going to change the window manager or the mouse focus mode for 1 software that doesn't behave correctly and can be replaced by another.

@aplus, its strange, that browser cannot work with such a popular window manager like gnome. In addition to this problem, Opera has many other annoying bugs. For example, a dropdown menu bar if you use the keyboard shortcut with "alt" key. These bugs are not fix for a long time (more than a half a year i think) and it is very annoying.

@ikuyanov : and a recent release broke all the videos.

and recent annoying behaviors ( e.g. on image copy-paste ) recently introduced on chrome are now here too.

@fabricen Add to this the inability to handle non-ascii characters (specifically CJK) consistently without resorting to the dreaded rectangles. Also, add the spotty restore of tabs on restart. Opera sometimes forgets all of the new tabs from the last day.
All complex software has bugs and things which do not work the way you would expect. Adding features is more fun than fixing bugs, improving performance, and polishing functions. Is there a publicly visible list of known issues?

The problem is fixed in the latest Opera Developer 84.0.4260.0! The opera window is no longer raised unwantedly when it gets focus

                        Thanks!

Hello, Issue is still present in stable release 83.0.4254.27, but there is a simple fix.

                          alex@Freesia:~$ uname -a
                          Linux Freesia 4.19.0-9-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.118-2 (2020-04-29) x86_64 GNU/Linux
                          alex@Freesia:~$ cat /etc/issue
                          Debian GNU/Linux 10 \n \l
                          alex@Freesia:~$ opera --version
                          83.0.4254.27
                          alex@Freesia:~$ icewm --version
IceWM 1.4.3.0~pre-20181030, Copyright 1997-2003 Marko Macek, 2001 Mathias Hasselmann.

I use click to raise. Opera stable still steals focus, unless you put it in its own workspace. Hope this helps.

@ikuyanov thanks for letting me know! It is good news. Maybe I will look into opera again in the future. This was a deal breaker for me so I moved on to vivaldi

@paulc LOL.. so am I. Unless Vivaldi did some stupid things that annoy me for months. I'm most likely staying with it.

Tried it. That's fixed. But it still wants to be it's own window manager instead of respecting the existing window manager and settings. I guess this is buh-bye opera.
