Update does not update

I'm on a OSX 10.6.8 machine, and this machine has Opera 10.6.3 installed.
When I click "check for updates", I'm informed that version 12.16 is available. When I click on "download and install", Opera seems to do something - at least it takes a while - and then restarts itself, but the Opera version is still 10.6.3.
I find it strange, that I'm never asked for my administrator password during this process. After all, Opera.app is in my Applications folder and Opera can't access this without my permission.
Another strange thing is that Operat suggests to upgrade to version 12.16, which is not the most recent one.
Any idea why it behaves like this?
