It would be useful to quickly open "work" workspace when a boss comes in while you're hanging on "personal" one

This is already supported; you can navigate to it. Shortcut below

@home-world thanks a lot, this really helped me assign a shortcut to the workspaces. some suggested alt+number as ctrl+number is already the default for tab switching. thanks for the link again.
