[Mail] Cannot connect

I inherited an old Core Duo iMac (OSX 10.6.8) and just got Opera Mail setup how I like it. Ever since I've had it installed, it has crashed several times a day. Now in the past few days, it's stopped connecting to the IMAP server. The status bar at the bottom just constantly says "Connecting... (0/2)".
Is Mail 1.0 known as being a bit flakey, or is this just a bad setup? I tried reinstalling, but deleting the .app didn't get rid of any of the account setup, so it hasn't helped. Is it worth doing a fresh install of Opera Mail, and if so, how do I got about uninstalling all the bits?

If it is an IMAP account as you say, just remove (delete) the account from Opera Mail and add the account back.
