What is the “maximum number of columns” option used for and what does it do?

This is my first post and I don't know what the stared/not stared field is for.

It sets the maximum number of columns you may have in your Start Page (a.k.a. Speed Dial). If you set the number to 9, when you add sites to your Start Page, you may have a total of 9 columns (i.e. 9 sites in a row) in your Speed Dial.
This option is specially useful if you have many websites/folders in your Speed Dial. That way, by increasing the maximum number of columns, you'll be able to see more entries in your speed dial without the need of scrolling down.
