How can I make smaller the size of tabs and windows?

I can't make the size of Opera's tabs or windows smaller to match the size of my Macbook Pro display. It's too long and impossible to reduce to the desired size as it was possible before.
I deleted the latest version and installed an older one that was working right, but when I closed the browser and opened it again, the latest version was re installed and the problem returns again. At least is there a way to prevent Opera from upgrading automatically or should I change to a different browser that works as user desires.
