Hi, I have this problem with Opera that it stopped automatically update since version 66, also when I manually try to update it keeps hanging on "checking for updates".
So far I tried to restart PC and Opera, reinstall Opera but the problem is still here and is not fixed.
I use Opera on Windows 10 on a gaming rig.

        • Download the Opera installer so you have it.

        • Goto the URL opera://about and take note of the install directory.

        • Close Opera and uninstall Opera via Settings -> Apps in Windows. Don't check the box to delete your data.

        • Use Windows Explorer to delete the install folder if it remains.

        • Delete all files and folders in "C:\Windows\temp" and "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\temp" to get rid of old Opera installer stuff.

        • Open up the Windows Task Scheduler and delete all Opera Scheduled tasks you see.

        • Open regedit and delete these keys:

          • "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet\OperaStable"

          • "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet\OperaStable"

          • "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Opera Software"

          • Any Opera keys under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall"

          • Any Opera keys under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall"

        • Launch the Opera installer, click "options", set "install for" to "all users" and make sure "install path" is set to "C:\Program Files\Opera", uncheck "import data from default browser", adjust the other options as you like, and install.

In Opera, check for updates on the opera://about or opera://update page. Also, open up the Windows Task Scheduler and adjust the daily trigger and conditions etc. for what time(s) Opera checks for updates (besides startup), so that the checking coincides with times your computer is actually on and connected to the net etc.

If that doesn't fix it, there's something outside of Opera interfering with checking for updates like security/anti-virus/firewall software or malware.

@burnout426 I followed your instructions whit a minor change, I only deleted the previous install folders (60 - 66). It works like it should, manual and automatic update responds to my interactions. Thanks again for your time and help.

@heszar Uninstalling the way I mentioned would leave your data alone, so there would have been no worries there. But, you could always copy the profile folder to somewhere safe (path shown on opera://about), while Opera is closed, before you do the uninstalling

But, since you got things working, don't worry about all that.

@burnout426 Thanks burnout426. I have also been having this problem for a couple of weeks. I was about to follow your detailed instructions when I noticed your comment at the end citing security/anti-virus/firewall software as a possible issue. I had installed Malwarebytes just a couple of weeks ago. So I have just disabled it for a couple of minutes, and Opera has now updated for me. So thanks again, problem sorted, although I am now wondering what other issues Malwarebytes may be causing me !
