Opera is freezing

  • Hello,
This morning Opera was updated, but now it is freezing. I uninstalled and reinstalled, but it stays the same. I can't even disabel the extentions or other settings. Since the beginning of januari i have also problems wit the speed of Opera. It is slow and uses a lot memory.

    Is there a solution?

    Wit regards
    Roel

  • It's the new version of Opera (67).

    Is there a solution?

    For now:

    • Download the last Opera 66 build there was.

    • Uninstall Opera and choose to keep your data.

    • Open a command prompt and run this command:

      "%USERPROFILE%/Downloads/Opera_66.0.3515.95_Setup_x64.exe" --launchopera=0

    • When the installer launches, click "options", take note of the install path, uncheck "import data from default browser", adjust anything else you need to and install.

    • After Opera is installed, go into the version folder that's in the install folder (with Windows Explorer). There, rename opera_autoupdater.exe to opera_autoupdater.off. Then, you can user Opera and stay at version 66 for now. Then, keep an eye out at https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/ for new versions of Opera 67 that have fixes for the freezing. Then, you can download that new version and install it.

  • Do you have open tabs? Does Opera freeze after a few seconds upon every startup ("not responding") and stay unresponsive so you have to force-close it? If so, that sounds much like my problem. Here's how I solved it:

    1. Exit Opera (force-close)
    2. Back up the file "Current Session" from your profile folder: https://help.opera.com/en/latest/crashes-and-issues/
Alternatively, just back up the whole profile folder (C:\Users[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable).
    3. Delete the file "Current Session" from your profile folder.
    4. Start Opera. (It should work fine now but your open tabs will be gone.)
    5. Close Opera.
    6. Copy your backup of "Current Session" back to your profile folder (replace the new file Opera created automatically).
    7. Start Opera.
    8. Success!

If you don't need to keep/restore your open tabs just follow steps 1, 3 & 4.
