Speed Dial tab on startup

I've just started using Opera for macOS and so far so good! However, there is one issue that is really putting me off sticking with what appears to be a fantastic browser. It really is becoming a showstopper for me.
So, when opening external links Opera will open up with the selected site in a background tab and Speed Dial as the front, visible tab. You then need to switch or close the tab to view the link you've just clicked.
When putting it in to words it doesn't seem like a big issue but as I say if I can't find a workaround for it I'll be switching back to Chrome or an alternative.
Please tell me there is a way to fix this folks
