Opera won't load existing Youtube comments and transcripts

Hi all. Using Opera 49 on a Mac Pro running 10.9.5 Mavericks. This is the last version of Opera that will work on this OS. My problem is that comments on YT videos don't load. I don't mean my comments - I mean the comments that everyone else has made that you can read under the video. This was working fine up until a couple of weeks ago. All I get is a rotating grey circle that looks like it's trying to load the comments, but it is just an endless loop. The comments never load. This problem also applies to transcripts. Other browsers like Chrome and Firefox work fine.

I have another computer running OS 10.12 Sierra, which can run a newer version of opera (65 I think), and this works fine - all comments load exactly as they have done for years.

Any help with this issue would be most appreciated. I would prefer not to upgrade my OS if i don't have to.
