      Hi,

I just noticed that Oper is blocking two (may be more) key combinations I use frequently:

Ctrl + Shift + End (select text in a text control down the end of the text)
Ctrl + Shift + Pos1 (select text in a text control up the beginning of the text)

Whenever Opera is running those two key combinations can't be used anymore in any Windows application (tested on multiple Windows installations)!

This only happens on my active profile, a new profile doe snot show this effect. Now I am trying to find out which setting in Opera causes this effect. I already tried to reset the key combinations in the opera settings but seems that this something else. The extended key combinations are also disabled.

As there is no export function to migrate the relevant settings to a fresh profile and I don't want to lose these key combinations with my current profile I am stuck.

Does anybody has an idea what Opera setting could cause this effect?

What I already tried (without effect):

      • Uninstalling all extensions
      • Resetting the key combinations in Opera settings
      • Resetting the flags in opera://flags

Hello, please fix this problem asap. It's unacceptable that Opera settings affects other Windows apps.

Yes, what you are describing is exactly the problem of this post. We are all waiting for a fix.

          Here another workaround:

          1. Open Opera
          2. Press SHIFT+ESC (this opens the Opera Task Manager)
          3. End process "Extension: Video Handler"
          4. Repeat step 3 (because it is restarted once)

          Downsides:

          • Only lasts until you restart Opera
          • "Opera Video pop-out" is not available (if you do not know what that is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEwdu2F_Rdw#t=1m20s

              Hi

I really like Opera and want to continue to use it, but it eliminates the ability to use commands such as control + shift + end and control + shift + home in other programs.

If you shut down the video handler extension these commands work again.

              https://www.askvg.com/opera-bug-fix-ctrlshifthome-and-ctrlshiftend-hotkeys-stopped-working-in-text-editors/

Could you please fix, I use these commands dozens of times a day and this is a really annoying bug.

I'll give it another week but then I'm just going to uninstall, it's too annoying to deal with.

Is this ever going to get fixed? Breaking critical functions outside of the Opera browser is problematic at best

Yea, I'm tired of killing that "Extension: Video handler" thing that messes up my vital shortcuts. This is better to be fixed ASAP.

Opera fixed this a while ago. It no longer puts the troublesome entries in the Preferences file. But, if the entries are already there in the preferences file from a version of Opera that had the problem, you'll have to remove them yourself or the issue will never be fixed for you.

Thank you, burnout426! I edited the Preferences file and removed the whole commands section, and that solved the issue. Although I see that someone else also recommends just changing all these shortcuts to global: false.

Yeah, you can do that instead if you want so that you can still use the shortcuts in Opera. However, the commands are not there at all in a fresh install/profile in current versions of Opera, so removing them would be best so that you're matching the current state of things and not relying on something that may keep working.

So if I uninstall Opera and reinstall it, it will be fixed? I don't really have the time to figure out editing the preferences file or whatever.

Only if you choose to not keep all your data when you uninstall. Instead, goto the URL opera://about, take note of the profile path, close down Opera and rename/delete the profile folder. It'll delete all your bookmarks, extensions, passwords and settings etc. so you're starting over completely. That's why editing the Preferences file is easier and better. But, you can wipe out the profile instead. No need to reinstall Opera itself.

If you don't mind losing your extensions where you have to reinstall them, you should be able to goto the URL opera://settings/reset and reset Opera.

Thanks for your help, I really do appreciate it.

I don't have time to figure that out so I guess it is goodbye Opera until this actually gets fixed in a reasonable manner.

It's unfortunate that Opera has broken this functionality for everyone, or at least every Windows user. It's not really acceptable, especially since it is affecting programs globally.

@rfj1862 You can contact me via PM to get my email address. You can send me your Preferences file and I can fix it for you and send the fixed version back. You can then replace yours with the fixed version if you want.

Or, if needed maybe I'll try and write a program to do it for you automatically.

Deleting the Preference file instead of the whole profile folder will work just fine. Both ways will require you to reinstall your extensions. It's just a matter of choice on whether you want to start completely fresh or retain other things like bookmarks and passwords etc.

It cannot be said that it was fixed, Opera must come with a full-fledged fix which modifies the preferences accordingly during an update, without requiring any user intervention. Please realise that most of the users don't know what is the cause of issues on their PC because the issue affects other programs, so they have no idea how to fix it.
If this issue is not going to be fixed, it is a very good reason to uninstall Opera to prevent further issues.

Yeah I tend to agree. "Fixing" something shouldn't require an average user with no interest or time to understand the underlying workings of Opera to start messing around with advanced settings.

I can imagine there is a significant number of very frustrated people out there who can't figure out why basic functionalities are broken across programs. This is a major issue that Opera has to address sooner rather than later.

It's a shame because Opera really was the best browser by far.

I would like that to happen too. But, since it hasn't, you'll need to fix it yourself.

Here are step-by-step instructions to fix the issue yourself. It's basically, open the Preferences file in JSONedit, delete the "Commands" node and save. But, the instructions below include all the little steps just in case you don't know how to get and install JSONedit and open Opera's Preferences file in it:

                                            • In Opera, goto the URL opera://about and take note of the "Profile" path.

                                            • Download http://tomeko.net/software/JSONedit/bin/JSONedit_0_9_33.zip.

                                            • Once it's downloaded, click the folder icon in the download dialog to show the file in Windows Explorer.

                                            • Right-click the file and choose "Extract all".

                                            • In the dialog that pops up, leave things at default and just click "extract".

                                            • You'll now have a window open showing JSONedit.exe. Close Opera and double-left-click JSONedit.exe.

                                            • When, JSONedit loads, goto "File" and click "open".

                                            • In the open dialog, browse to Opera's profile folder ("C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable" for example), change the "Files of type" drop-down to "All Files", select the "Preferences" file and click "open".

                                            Now for the actual fixing:

                                            • Now that the Preferences file is loaded in JSONEdit, expand the "Extensions" section under "root".

                                            • Then, under the "Extensions" section, right-click on the "Commands" section and click "Delete selected node".

                                            • Then, goto "File" and choose "save".

Then you're good to go. You can close JSONedit and the Windows Explorer windows and start Opera.

Optionally, if you first want to goto your Opera profile folder in Windows Explorer, you can right-click on the "Preferences" file and choose "copy". Then, you can right-click on your desktop or something and choose paste. That way, you have a backup copy of your preferences file. You won't need it though if you follow the steps correctly.
