      Using Opera 22.0.1471.50 with XP

Used Opera for many years - then went over to Firfox because I could not get my bookmarks to port across from one version of Opera to another

Thinking op coming back to opera, as it seems faster than Firefox... but now I dont seem to be able to work bookmarks at all - searched Help ... but not a lot of help....

After searching around I managed to get the bookmark bar up and I can see a plus sign to add a bookmark - but in my old system I had thousands and they were all carefully arranged in folders - cant see a way to do that in 22.0.1471.50

Looked at importing old bookmarks (now have loads in Firefox) went into Opera ... more tools... but import bookmarks is greyed out and does not work

What can I do I am lost - cant come back to Opera

You can import into Opera 12.17. Then use the Bookmarks Importer in Opera 22 to hopefully get those bookmarks. That Importer in Opera 22 only picks up bookmarks from Opera Presto. I'd uninstall Opera 22. Install Opera 12.17, and if you get the bookmarks into Opera 12.17, then Install Opera 22, and try the Bookmarks Importer in Opera 22, using the Bookmarks Importer.

With thousands of bookmars, though, this may not be wotth the transfer from Firefox. I's stay where you are. Come to Opera, but right now, don't expect to easily import thousands of bookmarks.

I've been an Opera user since 3.10 - back when I had to purchase Opera and it would fit on a 3-1/2 disk. I could always use my previous bookmarks until the last few versions. I'm getting tired of not being able to find or use my bookmarks. What is the secret?

What version are you using now. If you have Opera Presto (12.17 or earlier) on your computer, and have installed Opera 22, try Opera 22's Bookmarks Importer. Click on the Menu/Moor Tools/ Bookmarks Importer. That importer was designed to import bookmarks from Opera Presto into the new Opera.

Make sure in Opera 22 to activate the Personals Bookmarks Bar. Press Alt P (settings), and put a check in show Bookmarks Bar.

Seems things have not changed much in the few years I left Opera

Seems a bit micky mouse to have to load old versions and then change to new - cant see it would work anyway as the bookmarks importer is blued out so it wont work anyway?

Dissapointed ..... was hoping to come back to opera

From what other people are saying its a problem for them too

Why does 22 only pick up Presto bookmarks - surely this is a bit short sighted as loads of people may wish to move from some other browser... take it nobody is bothered to increase the number of users?

Was with Opera from the begining but it now seems to have gone off in another direction

              Dissapointed

No, things have changed tremendously since you left Opera. When Opera switched browser engines (from Presto to Blink) it had to be reprogrammed from scratch. We're very close to having a direct import in the browser. It's being worked on -- I think in Opera Next (vers. 23). That's the next update for us. Here's a blog discussion of the feature. http://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2014/06/opera-developer-update-silent-import/

Here's what they say in that blog for Opera Next, vers. 23 (currently we're at 22 as the last stable version):

"We want the conversion from other browsers to Opera to be as convenient as possible, and with this build we’re doing a silent import on first run (or if you have an empty profile). The feature looks up your current default browser, and then imports passwords, cookies, history and bookmarks to get you up and running with Opera without having to start from scratch."

It will be done πŸ™‚ So have a bit of patience. For the time being, (if you don't want to wait), you can get the bookmarks from Opera Presto to the new Opera. And you can import from a third party Browser into Opera Presto. However, there's this problem sometimes with the greying out of the Bookmarks Importer. The best chance that it works is to not have Opera 22 on the computer BEFORE Opera Presto (12.17). So you might try to uninstall Opera 22 completely. And uniinstall Opera 12.17 completely. Then re-install Opera 12.17. Opera will select the appropriate default location as part of the installation. Import your third party bookmarks into Opera 12.17. And then Install Opera 22. Opera will select the appropriate default location as part of the installation. And now try the Bookmarks Importer. Hopefully it will not be greyed out.

Or you can wait a bit. Opera 23, as I said is the next version for us, and the bookmarks importer is being worked on, precisely, it would appear, to address your situation. I'm sorry you're disappointed. It would be nice to have everything instantly. But Opera 22 is a fine new browser, it's very fast, has a super speed dial (where each speed dial position can be a folder), can use extensions in both the Opera and Chrome store. I don't know what browser you're currently using. If it's Chrome, you can just copy the bookmark file from the profile of Chrome into the bookmark file in the profile of Opera 22. Anyway, if it's a problem for you, be patient a bit. I believe a bookmarks importer is coming.

Let's see if I have this right. You say that: "Used Opera for many years - then went over to Firfox because I could not get my bookmarks to port across from one version of Opera to another." Then you turn around and say: "Seems things have not changed much in the few years I left Opera."

Hmmm... You left Opera a few years ago but you switched over to Firefox since you could not get your bookmarks to port from one version of Opera to the next. I rather doubt your story since it simply doesn't add up. Would you like to try again... this time with the truth?

If he left Opera a few years ago, it was before the change from Presto to Blink. There would have been no problem moving bookmarks from one version of Presto to the next. You hit the nail on the head, Leushino. For our poster.666, the devil is in the details πŸ˜‰

Ok you lot hang on I dont need flameing..... it is true what I say ... forget what the silly code name was, and I did not take a note of the version number... but it was whenever it first changed to chrome and It had a bookmark import option but when I tried it (a few times --- and using html etc) it just trashed the layout of the bookmarks and the folders etc were emptied and things were all over the place with lots of things missing.

As I had spent a lot of time and trouble sorting the bookmarks out I was forced to go to another browser. Tried firefox and although it cocked up a few things so I moved across and sorted things out manually as most folders were in tact

I thought Lem729 was trying to explain the situaltion but then I am not too sure

Opera is faster than firefox (I measured it) so it may be worth waiting as I have always liked the layout

                      Waiting.....

I was trying to explain. The Bookmark Importer is coming in Opera 23. Right now, it might be harder for you to make the conversion, though I did try to explain how. Still, you have thousands of bookmarks. I can't promise anything on that, because it's such a HUGE NUMBER. I didn't mean to tease with my last post, but you're number .666 (and that "devil is in the details"). Now really, I never could resist a good play on words. πŸ™‚

By the way, when you talk about how good Opera looks, what I've done is hide the Personal Bookmarks Toolbar, and just use a vertical display of bookmarks, with Chrookmarks for Chrome. It only shows the bookmarks when I click on the extension icon. If I need the bookmarks bar, I can bring it back for a second with ctrl shift E (which is almost a toggle). And put the check in Show the bookmarks bar. And then I go ctrl shift E, and take the check out. Generally I like a minimalist look on the browser, and I think Opera 22 looks super that way.

                          @peterx666

Here's an interesting post by someone who had thousands of bookmarks, and they were successfully moved from Opera 12.17 to Opera 22. So it's do-able -- moving a huge number of bookmarks -- even with the current Bookmark Importer feature in Opera 22. https://forums.opera.com/topic/3423/thanks-for-bookmark-import-workaround-in-opera-22-now-please-provide-export

Now since your bookmarks are in Firefox, you can decide to wait until Opera updates the Importer to cover imports from third party browser -- which shouldn't be too long. Or try to move them to Opera 12.17 (so that Opera 22 can import them via the Importer).

Thank you Lem - that was the type of sensible help I was looking for

Will wait til the importer works from firefox, meanwhile just use opera for faster searches et

                              Sorry, lem729.

Re your June 16 comment, above. ..."If I need the bookmarks bar, I can bring it back for a second with ctrl shift E (which is almost a toggle). And put the check in Show the bookmarks bar...."

In my current OPERA v22.0.1471.70, ctrl+Shift+E takes me to "Extensions" page and not to "Settings".

Am I missing something here - I currently hide/unhide the BOOKMARKS bar via ALT+P (ie.the short-cut select for Settings), and then tick/untick "Show the bookmarks bar".

                              Thanks

Damn, I meant Alt. P and put a check in show the bookmarks bar. It's almost a toggle. Sometimes, I post from my Ipad (not the Windows 7 desktop where I can double check things), and I go by memory. And mine is capable of discombobulating things. So sorry.

Ctrl + Shift + B. You can create folders there and drag and drop your bookmarks around. Its not totally finished though. Bookmarks are functional but rather basic. You will find better bookmarks features in Opera 27 and even better features in 28 but those are the Beta and Dev releases, respectively. So improvements are in the pipe.

I'm not an admin. I can't edit or remove anyones posts. For some reason the devs wont let you move folders to the top level. You can only have unsorted bookmarks and the 'My Folders' folder in the top menu. I hate it too but its a big step up from a few versions back. They didn't have bookmarks and they only had a thing called 'the stash' in its place.

                                            Hi @peterx666:

                                            1. If you want to be able to select multiple items at once, then go to the address bar, and type opera:flags#bookmarks-multi-drag, press Enter, select "Enabled" from the dropdown list, and restart the Opera (please be aware, that this feature is still a bit unstable, and therefore it may not work well, under various circumstances),

                                            2. Go to the Bookmark Manager (Ctrl+Shift+B) > "Imported Bookmarks" > "Imported from...", and press Ctrl+A to select all items at once, then press Ctrl+X (to cut them), navigate to the "Unsorted Bookmarks" in the side menu, and press Ctrl+V (to paste them) - after that, you can see them in the Opera's menu > Bookmarks.
